I'm leaning towards two flats that were combined into one unit by a previous owner. In the US we occasionally have things called "mother-in-law suites", although I'm not sure if the UK has anything similar. These suites are usually a semi-self-contained apartment that is either added onto or is carved out of a house for an in-law to move into so they can live semi-independently, but might still need some assistance due to age or health (or even just to help out with grandkids or something). So, they're usually connected to the main house, but will contain a bedroom, living room, kitchen, etc.
In a city situation it could make sense to do something similar with two apartments using a staircase and a door (or just a connecting door for two flats side-by-side). So you'd have one unit but two living spaces. I could see D&P renting a place like this, since one of their bigger complaints about their previous flat was a lack space and storage.
I mean, I might be completely off base, but it could explain two kitchens and such.
Anyways, I finally finished spooky week and loved it!
