Okay I obviously love Phil but I can't help but feel that I would hate him as a customer if he were to come into my job after hearing that pizza story. "The moral of the story is to be that person that complains." No Phil that is never the moral of the story, please do not harass any poor waitresses/clerks/etc. over something they have no control over and probably don't have the authority to decide to give you your money back. I hope he at least always asks to voice his complaints to a manager or something. (I'm probably just triggered from my own job dealing with customers, I just really hope he's reasonable about it because so many people are rude to me over minor inconveniences that I have no control over.)

I also did not know all the corgis are dead. So sad. I loved the way he said "hit me up Liz" tho
Yeah I actually had to stop watching this because those really old clips annoyed me a shit ton. I can respect that they are really old and both dan and phil said some pretty crap things back then but it still irks me to hear them. I can also understand that a lot of it probably has to do with his upbringing and current Phil seems to not act that way, or at least doesn't tell stories about it. Most of the more current clips were just Phil being stingy with money, which I find to be quite amusing, but the older clips were just not great.

i didn't mind the pizza story that much (also he made dan pretend to be him lmao). if the pizza is so hot that it burns your mouth then i think that is a real problem the chef should be aware of. the story that did make me frown was the hairdresser one. i agree that you've got to have at least some social skills to be a hairdresser but the way he framed it rubbed me the wrong way. as a shy person if someone is being extra talkative to me it only makes me want to open up more if i actually know the person and am interested in knowing them better. also as a person who is bad at small talk and dislikes when the hairdresser randomly starts talking to me i appreciate that she was concentrating on cutting his hair.

i agree! if the pizza story had happened to me, i wouldn’t have complained but i can understand that phil felt the need to.

but the story with the hairdresser felt really not nice and petty. i agree with phil : don’t do a job with people if you don’t like being social.
but (to me) there is a difference between rude and not smiling, stuff like that and simple not wanting to talk. there is no law saying your hairdresser has to talk to you, and the fact that he made them talk on purpose made me uncomfortable.
maybe it was just because of the way he phrased it.

but i understand that these are old clips and i love phil with all my heart nonetheless.

A hairdresser who doesn't want to make small talk and just cuts hair sounds wonderful to me personally  , each to their own.

I guess the aspects of "Phil + money" I'm mostly curious about is - why he appears to desire it so much and what/how much he actually spends it on in reality. Like during that unlimited wealth question, Dan gives the impression that Phil likes to spend money on himself, nothing wrong with that...yet we don't often hear about this, most of what we see is Phil being very conscious about the cost of things and you could argue being a bit stingy sometimes. He's clearly very business-minded. We know he enjoys gambling (or at least used to) and likes to treat those close to him, fancy restaurants, bars and hotels, cinema trips, and likes buying dvds/blue-rays and random nic-nacs .... but anything else in particular? Is he just a general saver or is he saving for something specific? Is it that the opportunity is right infront of him so why not make the most of it? Is it a safety net / comfort blanket? Does it bring him happiness? Is it addictive? Does he associate money with success? Is it to ensure continuation of the class/lifestyle he's accustomed to from his background? Is it about freedom so he doesn't have to do things he doesn't want to for money? Is it just the capitalist world we live in and I'm overthinking all of this? (yes ) Is it part of his world domination plan? Things we'll never know.

Manchester show spoiler -
These last few days I can't help but think about the missed opportunity for the audience at that last Manchester show to have passed the ball to Phil's mum....I'd have loved to have heard what she thought was hidden in the box under Dan's bed ;)

I thought the pizza one was the right thing to do, you can't just let people burn your mouth lol. :pizza:

And I thought the hairdresser thing was fair enough really. There's a presumption your hairdresser will be willing to chat with you. Obviously she didn't *have* to, but he had a right to try and engage her in conversation.

I think it was a lil jarring to see a younger Phil, when we're used to him in his sweeter and more mature present incarnation, but I don't think there was anything particularly wrong with those two stories.

(This is my first post in like six months and This is what motivated me to post godhelpme)
I miss Dan Howell's stupid face.

While I generally found that compilation funny (but only really at the parts where it's shown that Phil's cheap/stingy with money, or how he acts with money in the Sims and such), I was also rubbed the wrong way by bits like the pizza and hairdresser things.

While I do understand Phil's need to complain about the pizza, I think his moral of "always complain, especially because people give you free stuff" is shitty, and as someone who worked at a customer service desk for two years, I would have hated to have him as a customer.

I thought the hairdresser story was just plain rude, but I also couldn't help but feel like that's a side of Phil that we don't really see anymore. Those two clips were some of the oldest in the compilation, which leads me to believe that hopefully he's grown out of that behaviour. However, that also got me thinking about the gym incident where he didn't want to stand up for himself, to the point where Dan got frustrated with him for not doing so. While Phil could totally be that "can I speak to the manager" person now, I think it's incidents like that, and even when he didn't get a person in a kilt to deliver their christmas tree last year, that show that maybe there's at least some growth in character there, though maybe it leans a little more towards Phil's anxieties influencing his decision making.

Interesting compilation. I wasn’t overly bothered, I suppose because I can’t see Phil really complaining much to other people, just having imaginary conversations of what he would have said in his head and venting to Dan. Though I do agree some of his earlier stories were the wrong attitude to have and it did make me think about entitlement and how it seems they have come to expect free things as YouTubers. The Nintendo Switch comes to mind.

The kilt story still cracks me up. I was watching the video in bed last night with my husband next to me but not really paying much attention, but Phil’s intensity about that certainly got his attention, which made me realize though I had told him the story he never watched it.

in cosmetology school, they usually teach you how to talk to/with your clients since it's really important for their comfortability sometimes. you need communication for the stylist to know exactly what you want done. although i prefer silence when getting my hair cut, i understand people who need conversation if they can't stand silence.

Phil thriftiness just makes me feel fond, as my mom is the same way. Of course you should weigh your own laziness against the cost of delivery in deciding what to order. Of course you should buy seasonal items once the holiday has passed and they're on sale!

Dan and Phil play up the CapitaLester branding for laughs. Dan's had Phil's account passwords since before they even met. They use each other's devices/complain about the other using their laptops regularity. There's no way Dan actually needed Phil's fingerprint to purchase the elf in that one game. It was funnier that way though.

I am confused why he would expect not to be burned by pizza. That is just what pizza does. That is part of the pizza experience. He's trying to tell a story though. You can tell when he says "I was like, not that hot, Horatio! ...I got Dan to say that." Sure, Phil. Sure. I personally think Dan's more likely to have been offended on Phil's behalf, like in the gym story, and was like if you're not going to call I will, and Phil is just pleased with the free-food results. I think it's noteworthy that his second example of 'always complain about everything' is emailing Haribo to tell them... he loves Haribo. Controversial, Phil. Wow.

I'm glad he never complained to the kilt tree delivery company. I remember googling them and the people delivering the trees are rushed too much and not paid well and everything else you'd generally expect. He didn't really 'pay for a kilt' as he said later that kilt delivery was the only option; it's just the company's shtick. (Hilarious, though. I love me some Phil Lester.)

Can someone please send me that hairdresser's phone number? I have long hair just because I'm too anxious to make small talk with a hairdresser! I think Phil's complaints probably relate to using stories to keep hairdressing appointments from being awkward. I cba to find the clip of Phil complaining about Dan telling all the good stories to Fabrice first, but basically that. I sympathize with him, but he's wrong to blame the hairdresser for his discomfort.

And finally, just to make this completely fannish--you know how Phil often mentions being offered exorbitant amounts of money in the early YouTube days to do something kinky but innocent, like sneeze or show someone his feet? I feel like there's got to be an interesting story in there somewhere. I refuse to believe he didn't at least consider it.

Hmm this reminds me of Phil making up party games to break awkward silence. And also why he probably got on with Dan so well early on, the boy never shut up. Though they also grew to appreciate companionable silence.

Good insights @watsonian

I'm hoping they post the sims video today. I'm guessing it'll either be today or tomorrow. When was the last gaming video? Like over a week ago right? Not that I'm starving for content, but a new video would still be nice this weekend

I am 6 minutes in and honestly I need a break. What's up with this editing? It's so stressful! I don't need a zoom and spin and jpgs popping up all the time.
Whoever they hired needs to chill a bit, they're trying too hard to make it like what we are used to and now it's become an editing overkill.

Has a golfing video disappointed me yet? I liked this a lot, what a nail-biter til the very end. I was definitely rooting for Phil, what can I say I love a good underdog. Those bants were definitely something (can't wait to see what thread title suggestions come out of this), plus the competitive vibe was just so intense- I really enjoyed this one :lilheart:

Have they confirmed that they indeed hired someone? I know they were talking about it, but then we saw Phil editing his video and I don't know anymore.

No, but the gaming videos have changed a lot (imo) and I don't see why they would spend more time & effort on editing when they are clearly very busy. Having someone else edit a Let's Play is also pretty straight forward, compared to having an editor for personal channel, so I think they are doing their channels themselves but got someone for DAPG.
Dan hinted at hiring editors in a LS but everyone hated the idea, so I am not surprised if they want to keep it secret that they hired someone.

I am still not done with the vid and actually not enjoying it so much? It's too much editing and too much weird sounds/repetitiveness.

On one hand, I really do enjoy the golf videos, immensely. On the other, almost every word that Dan says in these videos makes me wanna grit my teeth and scream. It's nothing personal towards him, and I know that it's all fun, consensual banter, but all the bragging and high-pitched mocking makes me feel the urge to smack my head into a wall, repeatedly, every single time

Wow, they always get in some kind of mood in these videos, don't they?! Loved that little headbutt.

I'm not convinced they got an editor, I think it's just a bit rushed. I imagine most of the editing is being done by Dan late at night after a show, and that's why the energy might be a bit different than normal.

Good video, the golf videos are always good. I didn't notice anything different about the editing but maybe that's because I'm not looking for it.

I love how watching these videos feels like watching them play a game on their own off camera. Everything's just chill but competitive at the same time and Dan keeps making random sounds and they make lame smack talk and weird faces at each other, and it all just feels very much like how they would play a game in their own time.

Also - the end with Dan bending over in front of Phil. I know we're all thinking it. That screencap is definitely going to be used out of context a lot lol

Oh dear, oh my, oh golf! I wasn’t so sure about the first half of this, I was getting a lot of young bratty Dan flashbacks, but the second half picks up. Such innuendos. Off the top of my head “Phil wants to sit on it and then go in the hole”, “I spat on my hand and now I’m going in the hole”, “Are you creaming on my cake” and “Are you Fing my fucking butt?” is stuck in my head simply because he was avoiding saying fuck and then used it anyway. Shout out to Kath “don’t speak to me or my son ever again” and Phil stomping on Dan’s mum’s flower bed. Recognizing they’ve done a lot of furry representation and plan to step up for the scalies. Cheers!
