I bothered resident TIIT historian, @alittledizzy, who informed me this is from the bit where they mention things that won't happen in the show. In this case, 24-hour DITLs. (Shame, tbh.) So, uh... yeah, the exclusion of Phil's bedroom.... fascinating. 8-)

this I should a useless garbage comment but all I can picture when I see the name Janice is Barrett Wilbert Weed from the Mean Girls musical... well "Janis" but same difference really

also, I missed a lot of discourse while I was gone the past few days (thank god), but I maybe just want to add that...
...I legitimately never knew how offensive the USSR flag is, before reading all the outrage expressed here. To be fair, I am young and American, and my school system didn't really cover anything past WWII that intensively... but still, I consider myself pretty historically and politically aware, and even I was surprised to see all the backlash.

I knew that the USSR committed a lot of atrocities, but I never really associated the flag with that. If anything, my mind only associated the flag with communism, and in conjuncture, those communism memes that are so prevelant on the interwebs. I'm glad I'm aware now of how vitriolic the message that flag sends is. I don't know if it can be fairly compared to the Confederate flag, which is still actively used to oppress people (who look like me), but I don't want to compare levels of badness.

Looks like all is quiet on the western front. Where are Dan and Phil heading next? Whether Russia has anything to do with it or not, it's been 'a couple of days' now since the social media detox started, so I'm hoping we get at least a IG story (in absence of real content).

@whelpkeeper Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm genuinely shocked to hear that your school system didn't really intensively cover anything after WW2. How is one supposed to be aware then of some of the most impactful 'living' history of today? You can't really undstand much of what's happening in the world today without knowing some key facts like the cold war, The decolonization waves In Asia and Africa, The construction of the post WWII liberal international regime captured in Bretton-Woods, WTO, the World Bank. The rise of supranational organisations like the EU, Mercosur, Nafta and the end of the warsaw pact and the USSR. Were none of those treated in history class? Is history even a required course for everyone in school?

I also went to a school that didn’t cover much after WW2. I went to an American all girl catholic school and it didn’t teach me much of anything. Most of our history class was like biblical history and even the holocaust lessons had a gross feeling of “if only they were followers of Christ, maybe this wouldn’t have happened” I’m so glad that I am not still in that horrible bubble of ignorance and can educate myself now, but I still have so many holes in my knowledge.

(And this wasn’t some tiny school out in the Bible Belt like I am now. This was a catholic school in the middle of Los Angeles, California.)

Wow I’ve had a busy couple days and I’m just now catching up. Can we get a phandom kumbaya going because the drama is too much.

The pics/videos I’ve seen from the Russia meet&greets are some of the cutest so far. I really hope all the controversy doesn’t discourage the boys from visiting there.

Someone on twitter mentioned that this has given a lot of people an opportunity to learn about a different culture. One we think we know but get from scewed perspectives.

It makes me want to arrange for at least one fan per country/state to write a post on their country. Doesn't have to be political it could just be things they want people to know about their country or interesting facts. For example for NZ I'd probably write about the protests against apartheid and the rainbow warrior bombing. I don't think people know that France bombed us in the 80s. (Don't worry we're all still friends)

However I'm a bit too busy to organise it right now!

I did GCSE history and we also didn't cover anything beyond WW2. In fact we mainly focused on boring local history about farmers dressing up as women to burn down toll gates (we studied that 3 times throughout my secondary education!!) It's a real shame because history is a fascinating subject that can be completely ruined by a school curriculum.

I also watched that vid on a loop and find their communication by eyebrows fascinating (Dan raises his just before Phil does, but yeah Phil looks so done). Thanks for including the full video though, it really does minimize the moment and it’s good to see his recovery. It reminds me when Dan hit Phil during the VR simulation and it makes me wonder how many times they’ve accidentally whacked each other, because you know it can’t just be Dan. Aw Phil’s little sharpie friend. :love2:

Looking forward to the return of instastories, I wonder if they are going straight to Berlin or stopping somewhere first.
It's funny, watching the full clip I didn't even notice The Moment of Impact. True, they are two crispy clumsy dudes. A personal favourite of mine is in kinect sports when Dan accidentally hits Phil in the face and then blames him for it.

@MythicalPinkTrashCan @serenlas :( I didn't know it was that bad. It's disturbing that you both did have history classes but that what they teach you is so slanted and incomplete. The role of the catholic church in world war two is very grey While the Vatican remained officially neutral, in practice many cardinals and clergy collaborated to varying degrees with the Nazi regime. While there certainly were people who rejected the murdering and crimes of the regime on religious grounds, the relationship between the catholic church and facism at large is ... complicated. I guess they didn't say much at your school about how Hitler was by any contemporary standard an observing Catholic, and how every member of the Wehrmacht (the Nazi German army) wore the slogan 'Gott mit uns' - 'God (is) with us - on their belt buckles. Also let's not forget the holocaust happened in a overwhelmingly christian Western Europe by people who would call themselves devout catholics and protestants.
I'll stick to my own country (Belgium) because I'm a bit more familiar with the details. A general observation which may surprise you is that in many Western European democracies on the continent, the major christian parties aligned most closely with the church often had sympathy for Mussolini's facism. They certainly weren't the biggest proponents of democracy, and in many countries these parties were locked in battles with the 'left' socialists and communists to capture a political majority, with the somewhat smaller liberal fraction joining 'left' or 'right' coalitions (in western Europe liberal means economically right but socially left, and pro democracy). Christian parties were often right of center and shared a fear and hatred for the evils of godless Bolshevism. They often had an autocratic streak (cfr the Ultramontanians).

It was this anti-communist stance ( that was very much also supported Pope Pius XII) that formed a rallying cause since the thirties and when Belgium got occupied in WW2, a lot of schools which were run by the church or christian religious orders like the Jezuits, actively recruited for Hitler's armies and to fight on the Eastern front - against the Bolshevist USSR. This support of the Christian institutions is one of the main reasons that Belgium send tens of thousands of voluntary combatants to fight for Nazi Germany (apart from the many more 'claimed' to fight or work in Nazi German factories). They were often were part of the most ideologically committed waffen SS (the NSDAP's personal army, so to speak, who were known to be extremely brutal in their violence on the front and considered slavic and jewish people to be "üntermenschen" not worthy of much consideration )

In general, you could say that the catholic church more or less accommodated it's stance along national borders - depending on who was in power, they sung a different song.

The idea that the holocaust would not have happened if only people were stronger believers is pretty much rejected by the facts of history and I agree it's pretty gross. Not only because it turns a blind eye towards the responsibilities and actions of the church and it's believers but also because imo it fundamentally misunderstands human nature, and how the allure of facism can sway populations and drive them to do utterly inhumane things.
If we can't in earnest discuss the dangers and try get to an accurate understanding of what was going on, how can we hope to guard ourselves from the same thing happening in the future ? Donals Trump / Viktor Orban / Erdohan / Putin / ...

Under a spoiler so you don't have to see it if you don't want more drama:
Man, I log off for a few days and things go down. Here’s my two cents that no one actually asked for but whatever: Yes, it’s absolutely not a good idea to pose with the Soviet flag, not because of the communism symbol but because it’s the Soviet flag. That flag stands for an oppressive society, genocide and suffering for loads of people for very valid reasons. (And to be honest, anyone going “The Soviet Union wasn’t that bad”, maybe tell that to the people (and their families) it sent to gulags and exiled to Siberia or just straight up murdered, idk. That's what the flag is associated with. It's not harmless.)

I’m originally from a country with its own troubled relations to the Soviet Union and I recognised that flag immediately and it startled me. However: Dan and Phil are British. This is literally not their history, they probably have very little contact points with Soviet history. Just like I, as an European, actually did not learn too much about British colonialism in school. Because history classes in school are almost always shitty, let’s be real here, and usually only cover history relevant for your own country. I learnt all about the Prague Spring. Did you? Probably not if it’s not your history and that’s okay because schools literally can’t teach every piece of world history, no matter how important it actually may be.

So I cringed, but I can’t bring myself to blame Dan and Phil here. They probably thought it was a simple communism flag and even though I of course realise that other people might have very different attitudes towards communism, the concept of communism in itself isn’t that problematic. The Soviet Union and the flag that stands for it however stand for oppression, suffering and lots of death for many, many people so no matter what your personal feelings about the Soviet Union are, posing with that flag is still very much a bad idea and I really think it happened out of ignorance and not because the guys thought “Wow, the Soviet Flag? How funny.” I’m just pretty sure they didn’t recognise it as such.

Personally I’d compare it to posing with the GDR flag maybe? It’s just weird and unnecessary because these flags stand for countries that no longer exist and that many people associate with suffering and oppression. (I actually think the comparison with the Confederate flag was good too.)

Dan wrote:This is the thing - people, they always stereotype countries based on stupid stuff that you read on the internet or you hear in the news and people are always like - you know, it’s the same, people are like - what are British people like, what are Americans like, ew Americans- Russian people- and it’s like, we met all of you and you’re all so nice! We just want you to know, okay, that we’ve come here and we’ve seen all of you and the Russia that we’ve seen - which is all of you here - we love it. So thank you. We appreciate that.

I didn’t recognise that flag at first and I did a level and GCSE history, however I did them both many years ago and flags are not something that pop up a lot in my memory, bear in mind the last education either of them did was about a decade ago and it wasn’t history so expecting them to recognise the flag, process what it is and then contemplate the repercussions of posing with it etc in the space of 30 seconds is a bit ridiculous to be honest.

It belatedly occurs to me that I actually just sound genuinely crazy when I reference something that was said 6 years ago because I just heard it and so it feels relevant to me. Just realized there's a live-show re-watch thread too. IDB why you so perfect?

@autumnhearth Their eyebrow communication is really cute. Dan's eyebrows are going 'oops sorry ily was that funny r u mad?" and Phil's are just 'Yep.' #Phanbrowdivorce. ... ok maybe I just sound genuinely crazy whenever I talk.

About II:
Can we talk about how genuinely cute it is that Dan and Phil have chosen to make relationship advice a part of the real talk section? Especially because their advice seems to be that if you are not as compatible as they are then you ought to just break up.

The discussion of education around the world is very interesting, but has moved beyond the topic of Dan and Phil. Fortunately, IDB has a perfect place to continue the conversation: the Sociopolitical Issue thread!

In fact, this forum has loads of interesting side threads--about Dan and Phil and about just about anything else members want to post about. Go here and check out the variety! :tu:

Haha I wouldn't actually expect you to. France has a lot more history to know. I walk past pubs in London older than when New Zealand was colonised.

It just sticks out here because it's the only act of terrorism on our soil. Also it's tied up with why we went so anti nuclear afterwards, the boat was protesting the French nuclear testing in the Pacific. It also affected relationships with the US (we effectively banned their war ships).
