Whoo! I survived the first episode of Produce 48. I had some time to recover, so here are some thoughts based on watching the raw episode without any real knowledge of Korean:
- I really miss BoA as representative. She was genuinely the best thing about last season, she was so nice and supportive to everyone. I just really love BoA.
- Even though Mnet probably only did it because they wanted an added layer of drama with Kaeun being there (and maybe they hoped that she would cry like last year when she saw JR) but I was happy to see Kahi. I will miss her for the rest of this season. I'm sure returning judge Bae Yoon Jung will do a fine job of traumatizing contestants for the rest of their lives in her place, but Kahi is more charming about it.
- They're definitely setting up the Japanese contestants as less talented than the Korean ones. Yoon Jung was pretty brutal about the lacking performances as well. But some girls were still really impressive, Takeuchi Miyu even snatched an A rank!
- Sakura made some statement about how Korean idols can break through in Japan, yet when Japanese idols leave Japan they don't get recognition. It wasn't a very smart thing to say considering probably the most important reason as to why Japanese idols aren't as popular worldwide is due to how inaccessible the market is. There's not much for people to recognize if they can't find it.
- I was super happy to see that everyone seemed to to get along and even tried to bond a bit, despite obvious language barrier. I need wholesome friendships!

My one and true fave, Miss Lee Kaeun did really well and I'm so proud of her. And I cried so much. She told the story how she has just been waiting for a comeback for 5 years, and how she thought she was alright but then seeing her old trainee friends go onto the first season and be more successful made her realize that she really wasn't. She even regretted debuting, because if she hadn't she maybe could've gone on the show with them instead of watching it at home. Bae Yoon Jung asked her whether After School has any plans or whether they're disbanded. Kaeun said that After School has not disbanded, but the fact that Pledis allowed her to go on the show 'does make it seem like that'. She asked to go on the show herself btw, seeing NU'EST last season inspired her. Anyway, she got an A rank which is what she deserved. :happytears:

Other girls that have performed and I liked:

Heo Yoonjin (Pledis) - Kaeun's new little sister. For a trainee of only 6 months she was really impressive and I felt a bit sorry for her that there was no focus on her due to Kaeun's story. Her C rank should've at least been B imo, but I hope she'll be able to rise. She's a talented cutie!
Lee Chaeyeon (WM) - I never watched Sixteen (she used to be in JYP and was in the running to be a Twice member) but she's super talented! I was so impressed by her dancing and stage presence. Her vocals are more than decent as well.
Yamada Noe (NGT48) - She was so much fun to watch, one of the girls with the strongest stage presence. I can definitely see why the judges liked her so much, I hope she does well.
Hwang Soyeon (Wellmade Yedang) - The girl who looks a bit like Sunmi and danced to Gashina. Holy shit, she was awesome! I hope she becomes more popular, because she's low in rankings atm.
Takeuchi Miyu (AKB48) - We love a vocalist! She's the highest ranking Japanese contestant so far, the only one at A. I liked the other girls in her team as well; Iwatate Sato and poor Goto Moe who lost her voice (due to allergies?) and couldn't sing.

I also liked the Yuehua Girls and Starship Girls, both teams had strong performances and their personalities stood out because they were quite chatty and loud. But I don't have a fave among them yet. The HOW Entertainment girls definitely had the most entertaining performance of the episode, special shout out to them.

Next week it's time for the others (including Sakura and Jurina) to perform and get their ranks.

Jurina won the Senbatsu Sousenkyo btw, and Sakura placed 3rd (kinda unexpected?). It was apparently Sakura's last Sousenkyo as well.

In non PD48 related news, BLACKPINK had their comeback. I really tried to like it, but I just wasn't very impressed? The song was underwhelming and their MV aesthetics have become predictable. Forever Young would've been a better title track imo, at least I can bop to that a little.

MTE. The song is underwhelming. I did like the scene in the MV with Jisoo and the paparazzi/fans holding their phones like guns but that was the most interesting part of the whole comeback. Everything else- the bindi, teddy's reliance on using middle eastern inspired music and recycled beats, and some of scenes in the video- were straight up lifted from old 2NE1/BB videos and songs.

That scene was very cool, I liked it too. But Jenny stroking the fennec fox (exotic animals are not for petting dammit) and that bedazzled tank... it was like watching I Am The Best Version 2. I genuinely like this group but I truly wish they were allowed to be more than 2NE2, because I feel like that's not who they are at all.

But they're successful like this, so it's not like anything will change. Just like Twice won't change their sound no matter how dead inside the members (especially Nayeon) look over having to do more of the same shit while they have shown during concerts that they're capable of other things too. And I can be mad about it, but then I look at how Gfriend's first concept change with Fingertip went and I suddenly get it

after planning to watch produce48 i've watched nothing but a few clips so far but seeing nako yabuki go from f to a rank and ranking in the top 20 so far has warmed my heart so much <3 <3 i said i'd watch for drama but really i'll watch for underdog success and drama re: jaejoong
this last month of promos in japan has made me so mad about what he hasn't been able to do for the last 8 years. he does too well on tv to be blacklisted for so long but seeing him now being so much more confident and mature compared to the last time he was able to be on variety shows just makes me so <3 <3 he's sold over 100k of his single in his first week and i just cannot WAIT until his next full album is out. i started sobbing before he even sang and by the time he got to stand by u i was dead. i'm a decade deep into stanning this idiot and i didn't think i'd still be so dedicated to an idol in 20gayteen but here we are. he only sang his own parts from the old songs. ugh his mind :prideheart2:

re: hyde in the spoiler just because less related but i mentioned him before
he's released 3 songs since i last mentioned him so... i liked who's gonna save us but i would've DIED over it when i was about 15. it's very that. it sounds a bit more like a vamps song than a hyde solo to me and i vastly prefer hyde's solo stuff to vamps, but i think i still prefer it to most vamps songs. i feel pretty much the same about after light except i like it even less. i'll still listen to it but it's going on my guilty pleasures emo kid playlist. having a solo with vamps-esque songs right after saying vamps was on hiatus definitely makes me think the split is because hyde really is a nightmare to work with because i don't think these were written with the intention of being a solo at first.

midnight celebration II though... is That Song. midnight celebration is one of my favourite hyde songs and i think i prefer this version to the original . so overall that's midnight celebration II >>> who's gonna save us >> after light. i hope there's a slightly more roentgen song at some point because that album is incredible and soothing and chill and i'd like a song in japanese to balance out 3 english ones.
i'll post this outside of the spoiler because god i love hyde and i hope he doesn't stop touring outside of asia while he's doing solo work. vamps have played in the uk a couple of times at least and where in glasgow just last year but i didn't get a chance to see that beautiful little man in person and it's devastating. i want to see hello played live and remember being a young boy and realising that mcr's i'm not okay completely rips this song off i'm joking. no i'm not. they did
my name is jaejmine masters and i have something to say. dan and phil have fucked up japan :japhan:
phil lester threw the first brick at stonewall, we love a queer icon :biflag:

NOOOOOOO D: She was my my second fave out of the JPN contestants, I'm so sad. But her health is the most important.

I can't believe the first elimination is already coming up, time flies. tbh at the moment I don't really have a full top 12 yet? This was the one I wrote down on Friday which isn't in any particular order aside from Kaeun and Miyu being my top 2. But now that Jurina is out I have another free spot...

1. Lee Kaeun (Pledis)
2. Takeuchi Miyu (AKB48)
3. Hwang Soyeon (Wellmade Yedang) -i know she isn't gonna make it lol, but i hope she'll survive one elimination-
4. Matsui Jurina (SKE48) NEW FREE SPOT
5. Miyawaki Sakura (HKT48)
6. Lee Chaeyeon (WM)
7. Kwon Eunbi (Woollim)
8. Ahn Yujin (Starship)
9. Choi Yena (Yuehua)
10. Heo Yoonjin (Pledis)
11. Yabuki Nako (HKT48)
12. FREE SPOT

So yeah, Kaeun and Miyu are my obvious faves of the season and I'm so happy that they're doing well. I'm shook over Kaeun being first two weeks in a row, but I feel like it'll drop for the elimination because Mnet has been giving her very little screentime since the center battle with Sakura and because her team lost the cover mission. All of Peek A Boo Team 1's time went to Mnet bullying a sick Gyuri over her failed high note. I can't believe I had Kaeun and Jurina in one team and never even got them chatting in Japanese. At least I'll always have their karaoke video...

Meanwhile, Miyu is the queen of having zero screentime since her first evaluation but making the public root for her anyway. As soon as word got around that she's not very popular within AKB, she immediately gained Potential Reversal Icon status and I'm so happy for her. She's very talented and lovely, and I think that with the kind of training she receives on Produce she'll be able to get even better and reach full potential.

I've got my eye on a bunch of potential picks for my free spots (and Soyeon's spot for when she gets booted next elimination lol) but we'll see how they do in the next mission. Everything can change. There's also a bunch of girls I genuinely really like, but don't want in the top 12.

Non Produce related kpop stuff:

NU'EST W's comeback with Deja Vu was solid, JR with that eye makeup does things to me.
Kyungri/Gyeongree (can Star Empire please stick to one romanization) made her solo debut with Blue Moon, and I actually really liked it. I hope that Four Nine Muses comes back soon as well tho.

Also one hit wonders Momoland did the same song as last time, and Apink actually did something different than usual... and I just can't seem to care about either lol.

Twice, Seventeen, Chungha, GFriend, and KARD are the comebacks I'll check out this month. Hyuna's charity project Triple H is also coming back, I might check that just because I love Hyuna.

Produce is struggling in ratings right now which isn't a shock cause Mnet keeps showing the same 5 people and its getting boring

Give Miyu screentime you cowards!!!!

Miyu is my number 1 pick and if she doesn't make in the group, im not stanning. Other picks are kirin chan, miu, miho, and kaeun.
Mako was my other pick but rumor has it she got eliminated. Which is pissing me off that both the hand clap team other than sae and instruction team all got eliminated when they were the best dance performances.

In other news I love Chungha's comeback. I mostly follow girl groups because I don't give a fuck about boy groups other than Shinee.

f(x) is my ultimate bias group, but I doubt they're ever coming back, they basically got after schooled. I'm so proud of Amber and her Nike campaign which is all I'ver ever wanted from her. She's my number 1 in kpop so I got so excited when I saw it

Thought I'd write something on Produce 48 since we're already at the Concept Evaluation round tomorrow.

Honestly, it's pretty clear that the formula has gone stale and that the public has just grown tired of surival shows (don't forget that after Broduce we had Idol School, The Unit and MixNine which all didn't do well). Together with some anti-Japan boycotting, an already over saturated market, and people being tired of Mnet's bullshit and the shows's predictability... I'm not surprised that this season hasn't gotten a lot of hype. The disillusion with what this show can do for careers is real as well. None of the ex I.O.I girls who have debuted since then have really hit big yet, Chungha is probably the one with the most success and recognition cause she doesn't have to carry the dead weight of another 10 members in a group like in WJSN, Gugudan, DIA, Weki Meki and Pristin. In a weird twist of fate, (G)I-DLE has surpassed them and that's the group headed by the girl who ranked 20th. People are now worrying about the future careers of some Wanna One members as well, fearing that without W1 people will just forget about some of them.

Anyway, we've had two rankings in the last week. The elimination episode where we finally saw full rankings after a few weeks of nothing, and the new ranking that Mnet randomly uploaded a few days ago (possibly because they weren't happy with it lol?). Honestly, I don't have a Top 12 right now. More like a Top 10, where the last two spots just kinda keep changing between a bunch of contestants (mainly Yena, Yiren, Sae and Miru).

My own current Top 12:
1. Lee Kaeun (Pledis)
2. Takeuchi Miyu (AKB48)
3. Lee Chaeyeon (WM)
4. Miyawaki Sakura (HKT48)
5. Park Haeyoon (FNC)
6. Heo Yoonjin (Pledis)
7. Han Chowon (CUBE)
8. Kwon Eunbi (Woollim)
9. Yabuki Nako (HKT48)
10. Miyazaki Miho (AKB48)

Probably the most notable absences on this list compared to the real rankings are the Starship girls and Kang Hyewon so let me explain that.
- Kang Hyewon is someone I might accept as this year's Sohye or Guanlin (but only because I like the Rap Queen storyline that keeps Cheetah employed on this show) but I need her to move the fuck down from those high rankings. She doesn't belong anywhere above #9.
- Jang Wonyoung is a sweetheart, but I can't root for her. She's 13 (will be 14 when the group debuts) and hasn't even finished middle school yet. Just no. She obviously has potential as an idol, but I feel like it'd be better for her to train normally and return to the scene in 2+ years.
- Ahn Yujin is... bland. I had her as a filler pick for quite a long time, but really nothing about her interests me. That just tells me that she needs more training tbh, she ain't ready for debut. She tumbled out of Top 12 in that random mid-week ranking due to an attitude controversy though (did Hyungseob teach you nothing??), so I wonder if Mnet will save her or not. I thought she was their fave.

Speaking of attitude controversies, Yoonjin's rising star came tumbling down hard as well. Challenging Nako again on Center position for Into The New World after the decision was already made was not a good idea. I wonder whether she will recover from this.

RIP to Mako, Hyunah, Eunyoung, Chiyori, Noe, and Choyeon. Y'all deserved better. Also Soyeon but she already got kicked out in the first elimination.

btw can they please replace Lee Seunggi as Representative/MC with literally anyone else?? He does not want to be there, he barely is there, and tbh Bora outshined when she replaced him for two episodes. Bring her back.

Soooooo the produce finale happened ......

What bullshit lineup is that, 3JPN girls! 3! wtf........ I have to laugh at Mnet's attempt to call this a "Global" Group when the majority of the girls are Korean. People comparing this group to twice make me laugh. 1. Twice was never sold as a collab btw Japan and Korea, and as a "Global GG" 2. Out of Twice's 9 members 4 are foreign with 3 being Jpn, this group has 12 members with only 3 jpn members

Miyu, Miho, Miu, Kaeun, Haeyoon, Chowon I'm so sorry mnet did you dirty. I hope a company picks them up to make the next JBJ

But with all that said I hope this izone group does well since those girls in the line up worked hard. I just won't stan. Though I do like Yena, so it might change in the future. I heard some japanese fans are already going to start boycotting so welp.

*deeeeeeeep breath* What. The. Fuck???? I'm so upset. :(

First and foremost about Kaeun. How did my ultimate fave from this season end up in the exact same spot as Jonghyun, my ult fave from last season? Two failed idols who debuted under Pledis in 2012, loved for their mature and humble attitudes, popular pics for the leader position, ranked first at some point during the series, both ended up at 14th place in the final episode. I am heartbroken. The good news that even if there's a new season of Produce (which I doubt because the ratings suuuucked) Pledis will have run out of artists for me to care about.

This morning I made up this beautiful Top 12 of lovely and talented girls:
I knew it was unrealistic, but it ended up being a complete fantasy. Because the lineup for IZONE (what a shit name omg it sounds like bootleg apple product), ended up being a JOKE. Congrats to Chaeyeon, Sakura, Nako, Yena and Eunbi. Really. But some of the other girls...

Wonyoung? Sweet girl, has some potential for her age, but girlie turned 14 today (international age, in Korea's she's 15) so Korea literally just chose a center who can't even work past 11pm. The girl is still in middle school and has a curfew. She's too young. Jo Yuri is an above average vocalist who has been pushed by Mnet for several episodes now (even though Haeyoon and Yunjin were clearly better) and that's why I just don't trust her jump from 18 to 3. Ahn Yujin... people hating on this girl need to chill the fuck out but she was Mnet's most obvious fave. And again, rising from 14 to 5. Gee I wonder why Mnet is being accused of rigging this shit. :hmmm:

I always knew either Hyewon or Minju would make it in, because for some reason every Produce final lineup needs their Sohye/Guanlin. I had my money on Hyewon, she has shown no improvement on anything since the first round but at least her story line was entertaining. But Hyewon AND Minju? Good lord. That's dead weight x2. I just don't get any hype about Minju, she looks like Tzuyu if Tzuyu was dead behind the eyes while performing.

Chaewon and Hitomi are fine, I never cared for them but at least they're pretty talented.

The fact that only 3 Japanese girls ended up in the group is so gross. The global girl group shit already died last week when Yunjin (American) and Yiren (Chinese) got eliminated, but only 3 Japanese girls? They were treated as a joke at the start of the show, improved so much since then, and in the end it was all for nothing. :sideeye: Jurina is the real winner for dropping out lmao.

Anyway good luck to this group I guess. They'll definitely win rookie award @ MAMA because Mnet will rig it, but with the lack of interest from Korea, there only being 3 Japanese girls, and inetz not giving a shit either I doub't they'll match the popularity of this year's monster rookies LOONA and (G)I-dle.

Then the girls who didn't make it in... :wahh:
You can't tell me that Kaeun and Miho weren't sidelined by Mnet due to their age. And in the case of Kaeun, they milked her for her After School background story. It's been years since their last comeback, but their name is still recognized by the public. But I don't think Mnet ever really wanted her. Nor did they want certified kpop fan Miho. Or Miyu. Sweet, talented Miyu. Who finally got a little bit of recognition after years of being ignored in AKB. Mnet definitely never wanted her, the only screen time she got was last week when she messed up.

Miru was over the show, I know she wanted to go back to NMB anyway. She said last week that she'd want to take Kaeun with her, and apparently she's rich so if she buys Kaeun out of her Pledis contract she got my full support lmao. Please take Yoonjin with you too, Pledis is too busy killing Pristin anyway.

Juri always deserved more than she got over the entire duration of this damn show, but she was never really given a proper chance to shine. It's a damn shame.

Miu was the only one from the bottom 8 that wasn't in my ideal line up, but she was talented and wonderful so I would've been totally happy with her in the group anyway. Sadly, Mnet didn't give a shit about her.

Chowon was the biggest surprise of the show for me. Her audition was... not good. And then she turned out to be this amazing all rounder with a voice like an angel. I hope she won't disappear in Cube's basement, they literally just debuted a girl group and adding her would not be a good idea. She's young though, I'm sure she'll have a bright future somehow.

And it's a damn shame that Haeyoon was never properly appreciated throughout the show, but she's gonna be just fine. FNC was already planning on debuting another girl group anyway, and she's gonna be their star.

So now I play the waiting and praying game with Pledis again. They better put in some work (don't you dare put them in the mess that is Pristin tho) because I will not be able to accept that Kaeun (and Yoonjin) won't reap some benefit from this ridiculous fucking show.

never really found myself neck deep in kpop, im merely a casual fan, but i do have a lot of close friends that have been drowning in it since shinee and tvxq first became popular so i always hear stuff from them. and seeing as i liked akb a lil bit, i tried tuning in pd48 (picked and chose random episodes and just watched the rest via the clips on mnets youtube channel) and LMAO, @Catallena's entire post about the finale is such a Big Mood™ it gave me a good chuckle.

honestly, ever since that high tension performance, i was rooting so much for miyu but of course mnet has to be a snake. despite playing "Where In The World Is Miyu?" in terms of screen time, she managed to get a lot of fans through her personality and talents - and its not just her, there were other girls where mnet has screwed over just for the sake of drama cough im not going to name names tho cough ...

anyways, c'est le vie i guess. im still proud of the girls that got in. i know everyone have put on a lot of time and effort in this show, it still sucks tho. im just a little bit salty at mnet.

I loved Miyu (pretty much every international fan did), but Mnet was not at all subtle about not wanting her. Talented, but not up to their visual standard. Even in episodes where she ranked high Mnet never paid attention to her. And then when she shot up in the rankings again, they caught her right at the moment where she screwed up by overestimating her vocal ability.

I wonder where she'll go from here. She did gain fans from the show, but I don't think AKB is the place for her anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if she graduated soon. Same probably goes for Miho :( They were really the 'second chance' girls along with Kaeun. Kinda fucked up that while Broduce was all about the second chance narrative with letting Minhyun and Sungwoon make the group + NU'EST's revival, while women apparently don't deserve second chances. Or don't get to be 'old', like Jisung. I suppose Mnet figured that Eunbi ticked all those boxes by herself anyway.

I'm thinking a lot about where Kaeun will go from here. Reboot her idol career with or without After School (or Yoonjin), or quit idol life for good and follow in the footsteps of other AS members and become a model and actress? She was decent enough in Idolm@ster, she's tall and beautiful... this might be the push she needs for a long and stable career.

wasnt miru saying that she'd like to recruit kaeun for nmb :illuminati: ??? jokes aside, i really liked her too and i believe she has the charm to succeed in whatever path she decides to take. as for miyu, it really made me sad especially considering how much effort she put. i wont be surprised if she chooses to graduate...but it does make me wonder if she will be scouted and/or decide to go to a different path besides akb?

also, just casually leaving this here...

If Pledis proves to be as useless as always, I'll gladly give Kaeun to Miru lol. Kaeun seemed fairly popular among Japanese Produce fans because of her fluent Japanese. Yoonjin was popular among JPN fans too, so afaic NMB can get two Pledis girls for the price of one.

I want that lineup so bad omg. They could be IZONE's rival group, like Nogizaka46 is to AKB48. :love2:

Also this collage hurts me on a deep emotional level (even though it's not completely accurate as far as the order in which they got those rankings go). I have the worst luck with my 1 picks. Look at them both just smiling at elimination.... The world does not deserve you :(

Miyu was my 1 pick and it honestly hurts she couldn't make it. I couldn't even look at my twitter after the show cause my whole timeline was produce and it was too much. Also, poor Miu was seen crying at the airport going back to Japan, I couldn't even finish watching the video without crying myself.

I heard Miho is looking for a Korean agency to pick her up, and I hope Miyu does the same. They are a lot more marketable now with their produce fame, but that won't last forever. Miyu said she was going to do an announcement on her showroom but Chiyori spilled the beens  . They're planning on doing an event in Korea so im excited for that

And the whole Kaeun thing is heart breaking, I don't trust Pledis with her or with Kirin. Pristin debut a year ago and won a rookie award and are nowhere to be found. The subunit flopped, and people are forgetting who they are.

Also, rumor going around is their planning and idol school 46

I really do hope that some of the Japanese girls will be able to stay active in Korea somehow. And if it comes to the possibility of project groups like IBI and JBJ, I do hope that the Japanese girls who want to can participate without backlash from Japan.

People keep saying Pledis is not only producing for IZONE, but managing them as well together with Stone Music. I have to laugh. The company that has mismanaged every girl group they've had (including their two Hello Venus girls) is getting a Produce group under their care? Don't they have enough to do with their own artists already? Seriously RIP Pristin, half their members are MIA and Kyulkyung is having a solo debut in China. I can only pray for Kaeun and Kirin at this point. Maybe they could join Stone Music. Kaeun was already in teams with Eunyoung and Sian, and she sat with PD101's Haein at Fashion Week. I'm sure Kirin would fit in in fine and Pledis is basically married to Stone these days anyway.

Idol School 46 will definitely flop if it happens. The first series was not that popular, fromis_9 is still nugu, and people are just over survival shows in general. There's been rumors of Sixteen Season 2 for JYP's new girl group as well, but idg why he'd do that. Twice may be the top girl group now, but Sixteen was not a very popular show. Though maybe now that Somi ditched them he might need the exposure.

In other survival show group news, UNI.T which is the girl group from The Unit will have their first comeback on the 13th and it will also be their last already. And that while they were supposed to promote for 14 months (7 months exclusive). These girls literally got nothing from this program, like I get that it flopped but the boy group already had a comeback and they will have another soon. It's a shame, all these girls are super talented and underrated + their debut was one the best songs of the year. Yet they're barely promoted and there aren't even any teasers for their comeback yet. And now they'll disband only 4 months after their debut. :sideeye: Most of these girls don't have anything to return to anymore, and those who do will return to nugu groups like SONAMOO and Laboum.

I'm not sure if this is allowed, but if it isn't, dearest mods, just pls. delete this and do not ban me. :respekt2:

But just for everyone's info, GD has released a documentary about his last tour called MOTTE: Act III. It basically shows his tour life, and how he's Kwon Jiyong instead of GD. VIPs have been sharing it among ourselves because it's under Youtube Premium and cannot be accessed by those in countries without the said program. If anyone's a fan of Bigbang (or even just of GD), especially those who don't really follow them anymore, or might just be missing him cause he's currently in the military, you can pm me for the link for it (we don't give it out publicly as the last time the uploader did it, she got reported a lot of times and the links were taken down). :?

Resident Bigbang stan signing off now. :platonic: :ribena: <3
