and he also holds up a script! i would love to find out what phil is truly capable of. he's been making films since he was a child so it surprises me that he hasn't tried to do anything bigger like PJ does with his videos (forever train/oscars hotel etc)greatnessflicker wrote:thanks!hiddenwombat wrote: i remember it being out earlier since he showed a student ID in this old video (08), but i don't remember anyone making any kind of fuss out of it.at 0:15
also, speaking of how phil never talks about his linguistic degree, at one minute in he holds up a massive film theory textbook. jeez, besides the fact that the both of them loveee Quentin Tarantino, when do we ever get in-depth movie talk from him?

Ah, okay, that makes sense. Thanks for giving me some perspective. Yeah, I think I usually click when I see an interesting title or thumbnail, not because I find someone attractive. I'm not really attracted to any of the youtubers that I watch.eevee wrote:Hmm. I would say that a lot of people on YT probably click on videos because the speaker is hot. That's certainly how I navigated YT back in the day. Obviously it's not the only reason why I continued to watch, but it's one of the main reasons why I clicked. It's interesting to me that that's not how you see it haha. So, you click on videos for content rather than eye candy? I do that with beauty bloggers and sometimes videos of YTers I don't watch much like shane, so I can understand that.ironic wrote:Not that I don't like it but I don't particularly care.
What I meant was, it surprises me when people say a big reason why Dan has more subscribers than Phil is that he's 'objectively prettier'. Like I would never think about it that way. Idk.
(And when I found Dan, I thought he was adorable, not hot

alittledizzy wrote:To me Phil's self-deprecation reads as a healthy amount because Phil also doesn't come off as reserved in pride about things he does, or things he does with Dan. Dan on the other hand, bothers me so much because he seems to think that the only way to approach anything creative he's done that's more than a year old is to basically call it a load of crap and laugh at it. The last radio show was sapped of sentimentality to me because it was basically an hour of Phil trying to subtly congratulate them and be proud of how far they'd come with the show, and Dan projecting embarrassment onto every single clip they showed.spaceguitar wrote: I realized this through thinking about how content that I like from Phil is things like DanandPhilCrafts, or his old vids where he either acted more confident or played an interesting character. So I guess that 'manchild' Phil for me is the one who puts himself down or acts really ditzy. I like the image of self-confident Phil, but I don't feel like I ever get to see it.
I think when Phil does put himself down it's because he's acknowledging something in himself that he thinks people would realize anyway, and it comes from an honest non-persona place. Whereas with Dan he takes things that no one would actually find that bad and acts like it's excruciating constantly. Maybe he really is that prone to thinking everything he's put effort toward in the past is crap, or maybe it's because if he acts that way about everything then he doesn't have to acknowledge the things that he actually feels it's true about. But in the end that means putting himself down is completely part of the danisnotonfire persona, yet Phil is the one getting raked over the coals for it. This is why these guys have personas; because people get comfortable in their concept or grasp of who Dan and Phil are from onscreen content, and to break out of those might be what people want on some level but it also unsettles them on another.
one of the reasons i almost "admire" phil is that i never felt like he is taking advantage of his situation-fanbase and even dans popularity. And what i love even more is that he wins peoples appreciation and respect without begging for it.
And thats exactly what i hate about dan and his persona. He is literally begging for people to validate him, to feel sorry for him and pity him.
This is like, exactly how I feel. I don't really feel the need for Phil to talk about serious things because YT is like a stress reliever, not like a let's-get-srs time. Idk. I guess if he found a balance between being super serious and lighthearted it'd be okay, but for now I really like how lighthearted he is and it's a nice escape from reality. His personality is also so unique that I would hate to say goodbye to it, I'm really fond of it. That being said if he decided to rebrand I would still support him!corn flakes wrote:

Seriously, these two need to knock it off with the "upload 5 mins after I go to sleep" BS they've been pulling recently.
I liked the vid. (Pleasantly) surprised to get the sketches, and it did make me smile/giggle nostalgically, and it IS something you still think about in your mid 20s, and into your 30s... (without at all wanting to go back and have to do school/college/uni exams... BTW, cheers to those harping on about dropping out of uni somehow meaning he shouldn't or can't offer advice on revising - trust me, that doesn't mean you either haven't done well academically up to that point, or don't know how to study for exams, just a little point I'd like to make.

I've said it before, but Phil's total silence on the whole thing whilst working in the background to quietly "get rid" - it ties in with the actions speak louder than words vibe that i get from him a lot, and I'm not surprised - having that video suddenly public for anyone to see ...I cant even imagine how awful that must have been, and I'm not in the least surprised either that Phil kept quiet, or, for that matter, that Dan went on an all-out overly-defensive denial/attack over it.

I'm the same way. Then again, I don't find very many people attractive in any way other than "wow adorable", so yeah. Oh Phil, there was never a better king of the universe.
During the time it was uploaded it wasn't unusual to use YT as a private video sharing platform. It's much easier to send a vid through other apps nowadays but a couple years back, there weren't that many options. Even I uploaded some personal vids in Youtube, even if I'm not really that active over there.eevee wrote:

Not to mention that Dan was in India when it was uploaded, so he 1) couldn't show him in person 2) the internet was probably relatively shit & even if there were ways to send large-ish video files in 2009 (I honestly can't remember, time is weird), it'd probably not be easy to download.kooshka wrote:During the time it was uploaded it wasn't unusual to use YT as a private video sharing platform. OK, does this alleged airport incident deserve an #airportgate tag? I'm don't follow Twitter or Tumblr that closely wrt to D&P - I like my info filtered, and this site excels at it...

I live for the day of Phil's rebranding as well and do believe that it will come. That being said, as an older person, his childishness doesn't really bother as much as I think it would if I were a decade or so younger. I don't know if this is other 's experience but as I've gotten older, I've started to see just about everyone as a peer. You start to realize that what we think about as maturity is, often times, a facade and we're all just human and trying to figure out this thing called life with no clear roadmap. Being able to laugh at himself, be silly, and not care about how others perceive him actually makes him look more mature to me. The older you get, the more you lose set ideas of what an adult should look like in others and in yourself.
Dan's new vid was kinda meh for me. Honestly, I stick by what I said earlier about him just chucking something out to stay on his target demographic's radar. Even he acknowledged it with his comment at the end.
It’s long past gone but I'm chucking my box game results up here for kicks (I did it along with them when I watched the video):
Finally, ::sing song:: tomorrow is a no-show day and a holiday both here and in the UK will we possibly maybe get a lil ls from our sojourners from the land of 10,000 lakes (and ten billion mosquitos)? Phil. Phil. Don’t even think about it…delete that insect tweet right.now. backspace.backspace.backspace.thank.you.

Interesting this should come up because I saw a movie yesterday that got me thinking about :hiddenwombat wrote:i think he just desperately wants a pet/child/SOMETHING to take care of but he's not allowed any of that so he's collecting plant children. Also, no idea why, but your post just reminded me of this:
"Sleep now little trashcans,
Dream of content new,
Tomorrow is a no-show day,
And 'bants is here for you...
Liveshows streamed from motels,
on fine form,
Good wifi means no awful lag,
Pheels all fuzzy and warm.
'Bants is here for you,
We are here for us
Goodnight best friends!"
Yup, sickening I know, but I don't care!!

Hi guys, I've been reading here and GG for ages, but this is my first time posting, also I've been away for a few days, so I'm really sorry if this has already been bought up!! I was just watching Dan's video and noticed in the bottom of the mirror in the bathroom (at about 2:35), there's something that seems to look like Phil's laptop, but not 100% sure. Not sure if it means anything, just thought I'd bring it up in case it interested anyone
Again, I'm really sorry if this has already been bought up, or if it's not relevant etc. I don't really know what I'm doing tbh

Waggle9007, ooh, good eyes! That's definitely Phil's laptop, you can see the pikachu sticker and the pandas clearly. (Picture of his laptop for comparison.)

I was just wondering, has anyone on Twitter been bothering about the king-sized bed thing? I just checked the comment section of Dan's video again, and no one seemed to bring it up. I'm sincerely hoping that people won't make a deal out of it but I think that's too optimistic. I'd check it myself but I can only handle so much second-hand embarrassment without wanting to explode.

I think you are. +1 for more "real" (whatever that is - I'm not sure we really know)Winston wrote:They both have personas. They both are much more interesting to me as themselves. Or what they allow us to see as themselves. YouNow, Radio, Gaming channel etc. Of course they are still in persona mode on these, but they are less so than when they are on the main channels. I want to see the Phil that wins Cards against humanity sometimes! That is what I mean by rebranding, remove the fake and instill the real, or at least realer Phil and Dan. I know this would never happen, but little glimpses now and then would be great. It does seem to be happening in some places, but then in others it is almost exaggerated persona. I am looking at the Obama Llama vid as an example. I see real persona, but then over persona in both of them. I really like both of them as people, from what I can see of them and I think if they would show that side more they would be more relevant than they are currently. To new people I could see the over "acting" as off putting. I don't know if I am getting my point across the way I want. I have too many distractions right now to really express myself properly.
together or separately.
Sometimes I wonder (project) if they are afraid hesitant to change their branding, bump up their target age group, be more themselves etc. After all, look at all that doing what they've been doing has brought them. It might feel quite risky (as opposed to risque - pun, sort of) to change the formula. And there may be others (i.e. management) who are somewhat financially dependent on them, who might exert some pressure for "staying the course".

I, personally, happen to agree with you, that's what I would do, although I would never be a youtuber/celebrity to begin with, so moot point.greatnessflicker wrote:I've hinted at this being my opinion before, but is it reaching too much to assume that the leaking of the valentine's day video was a major factor into him closing himself up and tightening his persona? Like, we all talk about dan's reaction because he was vocal about it, but I think Phil's silence says much more. If I filmed something that intimate and then it became publicly available, I would definitely alter my image and try to avoid being put into that vulnerable state again.
Does anyone know about how many subscribers each had when voldy leaked the first and 2nd times?
can you tell I'm always 4-5 pages behind??!
