One thing ramping up Deppy's views is rewatching, ofc. When I was queueing for Tatinof, I overheard a girl say she'd watch their gaming videos three times, one to watch each of them and one to watch the game (or perhaps both of them together). I find Marcus all right, though I didn't hear the snapchat joke.

Why do you guys think that the Phandom will click, though? Is it just because Deppy is there or something more? Are they just eager to know what other YTers think of Deppy, or are they waiting for some kind of phan confirmation? Or maybe it's the thought of other YTers recognizing Deppy that makes them want to click?
I mean... there must be a reason on why the phandom will click, right?
Or... maybe not. They just want to click it because Deppy is there.

I can't speak for the whole phandom, of course, but I would go with a combination of curiosity about what other youtubers are saying about deppy and also just wanting some sort of content involving them. Deppy are closed off in a lot of ways, from us and from other youtubers, and it's always interesting to hear what other people have to say about them. I don't think it's been about a phan confirmation for a few years now, but maybe it still is in some specific situations. Although deppy seem to be doing a decent job on their own of showing us what their relationship is really like these days, so I like to think that particular form of clickbait isn't quite as effective as it was maybe in 2014.

Do you think that it would make a difference if Deppy would upload more frequently, though, mostly if it's joint content?

The Internet Takeover was kind of a flop, nobody was here for it except for the times D&P were on. Considering it was Deppy's first original show concept (the Sunday shows were just as pimped up request show after all), I'm not sure whether that has reflected well on them.

But I'd looooove for D&P to do occasional radio documentaries and specials like they used to do. It'd be less time consuming than a regular show and I really enjoyed the ones they did. Especially the Happiness one which gave us this softness:
and this hilarious mess:
I think it was a flop because people were there for Dan and Phil who simply were not on. You can't convince me the request show coasted only on being the request show. Them opening the doors was a part of a conscious effort on BBC's side to make Radio One popular with the 14-18 and 18-24 demo. That's the reason why you now have Nick Grimshaw in the mornings rather than Chris Moyles, even if the latter pulled better numbers - Nick performs better in the target demo. So since Dan and Phil consistently, by themselves pull nice numbers and simply don't deliver when paired with others, it would make sense for the Beebs to try and get them back to their original set up rather than bet on wildcards who don't come with built in audience.
I know all that, what I was saying that in the previous show D&P only created a format around the already existing request show so they had a solid base to work with. With The Internet Takeover they had no base, they created the entire concept of a show for the first time making any success or failure their direct responsibility than when they were just hosts with some original segments. And it probably didn't work out as well as D&P and the BBC had hoped. I also imagine that the show was expensive to make. It was filmed, internationally streamed, all episodes except D&P's had to be pre-recorded and some of the more famous hosts like Zoella, Tyler, Felix etc. probably asked for a good sum of money to appear. All of that can't have reflected well on D&P, no matter how much BBCR1 does love them and the audience they pull in. I also wonder how much impact the phandom actually had on R1's demographic. Teens flocking to R1 for one or two hours a week/month is great, but if they never stick with the station after it's over and don't tune in any other time it might not be worth it.

Because they did initially talk about only a hiatus and didn't start pulling strange faces at mention of the show until summer, I suspect that between that time their contracts were up and that negotiations didn't go well so ultimately they parted ways. That would make a regular show impossible, but they did specials before they had a regular show and contract so I really do hope it is not the end of their radio days. It's still my second favorite thing they've done, right behind DAPG
This is not true, I'm afraid. As I stated above, the Internet Takeover wasn't unpopular because it was a bad idea, it was unpopular because it didn't have Dan and Phil. The Request Show was flopping long before they came along, they weren't coasting on built in audiences. A quick search of the R1 facebook will show you that Jameela's version got about 100 requests on average in the swing of things (sometimes as low as 50, sometimes as high as 140). Dan and Phil got over 500, consistently. Therefore people aren't there because it's the request show, they are there because Dan and Phil are on. This is also why it was called the Dan and Phil Show, during their time it was barely the request show. Combine this with the supposed low listenership to hosts other than them on the Takeover and you get a situation similar to what Top Gear is going trough at the moment: same format absolutely tanking in ratings with different hosts.
So it was a bad idea, because the entire Internet Takeover format that D&P created revolved around switching hosts every week. That was the format, and it failed. And as creators of the whole thing (backed up by R1 being thirsty for more teen audiences) they failed. Top Gear isn't comparable to this at all, because the format of the show was never set up to switch out abusive wankers hosts. The Internet Takeover was.

So The Internet Takeover didn't just fail because of the hosts, it failed because of the format that let it revolve around those hosts. Who happened to be shit and uninteresting, and most importantly didn't have a fanbase as loyal as the phandom. One could have some of the best and most popular hosts out there, when put in a bad format it's still gonna be shit and possibly a flop. Of course it can work the other way around as well, but format is so important.

As far as the request show goes, again it's about format. It's true that they didn't build on an existing audience (request shows are the reject hours of radio imo lol, it's where you put your shitty boring jocks who can't put a good show and playlist together to save their lives.. there is no real attached audience normally) but on an existing format. And D&P being the kings of audience interaction that they are owned it. Back then they were put into the right format that they properly tweaked into their show while still honoring the foundation of it. They easily could've been dropped into a format that didn't suit them, they really got quite quickly.

Hosts and formats are equally important in media, and if you format solely revolved around hosts changing every week... well. It can go like this.
I think we're looking at one set of data and coming to two different conclusions. In my opinion, if the format works with a set of hosts and not with another, that's just a part of it and we couldn't possibly call the whole thing flop. Some people just aren't cut out for hosts, that doesn't mean what they're hosting isn't good, it means that it's not working. But let's agree to disagree, all opinions are valid :platonic:

This is a dark book, yeah it's definitely one of my favorites and it changed my life when I read it when I was about 15. I'm not sure whether Dan would read it but I would be interested in hearing his opinion regarding it. (Does he actually finish books he has read? Does he read books or is he all waffle without substance? idk)
If you like this one I also recommend other books by the author Margaret Atwood, such as Oryx and Crake if you want something up a similar dystopic genre.

you guys are the best! I'll talk to you and flurry once I finish it, it's really good so far!

If you're going to shit on the phandom, I'd understand where you're coming from Marcus; however, triggered jokes just aren't funny anymore (nor have they ever been) and you're making fun of them while using them for views so..... yikes.

Also I TOTALLY understand why Dan talks down to his fan base considering the chat but it really bugs me when he acts like he's more cultured in music because one of the only things I pride myself in is my knowledge of music and music history. I WOULD KICK DAN'S ASS AT MUSIC KNOWLEDGE lol. Plus people thinking that others can't understand their music is  but whatever I love you anyways Dan lol

could you give an example of what you're thinking about? i'm genuinely interested because i only ever get the impression that he enjoys to recommend music he's been listening too, plus it seems to be mostly in response to the chat asking for recommendations. i suppose he does take a certain pride in his taste in music, but it personally never rubbed me in the wrong way, so i'd like to understand where you're coming from.

re: marcus, i'm a bit torn -- in general i don't think it's using deppy for views per se if he mentions either in a format that's based in talking about other youtubers (i genuinely don't understand the appeal of it though but tastes are different), plus it's not like he's a random person they never interacted with, and dan also showed an old marcus picture in the nhie video, so i feel like it shouldn't be a big deal. the "triggered" joke bugged me too, though. but i guess it's up to me to not watch his videos.
thank's you were great

I get this vibe too and it irritates me ngl as I pride myself in music knowledge also. I think it's because the chat always asks him about the same stuff (top, panic, fob, mcr that kind of stuff) so he assumes it's just what most of his audience listen to which, to be fair, is probably true (not that there anything wrong with that music, I listen to it on occasion myself)
but yeah i get condescending vibes when he talks about his ~eclectic~ music taste. i don't think it's intentional though

Honestly I think it's more a me issue than a Dan issue. He's probably just annoyed by the people constantly wanting to talk about top and stuff and I get that, but idk the assumption annoys me even if it's not specifically about me. As a teenage girl people are constantly not taking my music recommendations which is so frustrating because I am so passionate about music and like all kinds both old and new. But saying stuff like making fun of the person who mentioned "creep" as their favorite radiohead song just kind of irritates me. Like at the same time I totally understand that radiohead is his favorite band so it's probably frustrating since they are so much more than that one song (I love ok computer as much as the next guy but creep still rules even though it's the breakthrough single) but why couldn't he recomend good albums to get into instead?

Also saying that modern music is the best time for music because it just gets more advanced annoyed me? Like I'm not one of those people who only likes the classics and shits on new music because that's annoying, but Dan's doing the exact same thing but reversed? If you like new music that's cool but I think it's important to know how the genres came to be and the trailblazers of certain genres. The Beatles aren't the only band to listen to before the 90's, there's plenty of music that's aged so much better! Sorry this got rant-y lol

Although deppy seem to be doing a decent job on their own of showing us what their relationship is really like these days, so I like to think that particular form of clickbait isn't quite as effective as it was maybe in 2014.
I'm horribly incoherent but I was actually kind of thinking recently about how Dan and Phil's formula is so different from most youtubers and their following is really something special? Statistically Pewdiepie is one of the biggest youtubers, and although his fanbase is for the most part very supportive and wonderful, nobody would go out of their way to find him or Marzia in the background of a vlog. (I mean, I love them both, but I wouldn't.) I'm not saying a fanbase audience like the phandom should be preferred , but dan and phil are certainly doing some things right?
Their views are incredibly consistent. It could be because they don't upload often. It could be because of phan. It could be simply because they have pleasant personalities. The same goes for other youtuber's videos. I feel gross clicking on a video just because I see Deppy in the thumbnail, because clearly those youtubers know exactly what they're doing, and I'm not entirely sure why I'm so drawn a video that might include them, even for just two seconds. I guess it's mainly because I barely see anything of them. A lot of us claim to know everything about Dan and Phil, but none of us really do. What we're allowed to know about their personal lives is very controlled by them, which is perfectly fine. I mean, most online creators today don't have such a defined line between their personal lives and the content online, but that's what makes Dan and Phil different and very separated from the other youtubers. uh... reminds me of something
I really don't mind that they keep so much of their life from us, and I don't blame them, but other youtubers do and will always take advantage of our need to see more and more of them. I think if deppy uploaded more, maybe we'd be a bit more quenched but it'd really ruin their "formula" for me.
