Perhaps resent wasn't the right word. I like how you framed it better than how I did. It isn't right for him to use that fanbase to his advantage when he can and shut them down when he doesn't want to deal with them.

This, among other reasons, is why I will always be a Phil girl. He radiates positivity and gratitude. He can be stern when it gets to be too much (like people telling him not to get laser eye surgery because of the glasses) but, for the most part, he is grateful and kind. god i love phil lester so much holy shit

Omg, THIS. I just watched his liveshow and I loved that moment! He puts forward his point without blaming or snubbing anyone or letting it affect his general mood, and I feel like he has such a confident view of his work and also healthy relationship with his audience, even though he even shares less of his private life. In comparison to the discussion about Dan right now... The contrast between them has never been bigger for me personally... (I really don't want to make Dan look bad by comparing them, sometimes it just frustrates me to no end how difficult he makes everything for himself)

I don't want to sound harsh or overly critical but anyway here goes:

When I saw ISG I actually laughed out loud because this happens after all the expectations and hype of the video. Now bearing in mind that I do not explore the D&P sections of tumblr - I get my knowledge mostly from here and my own interpretation of their liveshows/videos - I thought that Dan was going to post either about 1. Rebranding (he talked so much about changing his name/channel etc and then turns around and mocks people for thinking that way and says it's "a meme"; at this point I'm not even sure what a meme is and what it isn't because hey to Dan everything is explained by being either ironic, a meme or a joke and 2. Kinks (since he explicitly said so in connection to a question in his live show). Now when Dan makes such comments, people logically expect that his video will follow up on said comments. That doesn't happen and he posts something - that to me, I emphasise, to me - is dull and unoriginal.

I loved the first few ISGs for their humour and sarcasm and yes irony - this not so. I don't know if he's using the ISGs to become a sort of wholesome big brother figure (though hey isn't wholesomeness also ironic and a joke and a meme???), but I didn't really subscribe to his channel to hear big brother advice or moralising (same reason why I didn't like his school video). Personally this video did nothing for me.

Now the reaction on twitter: Dan hyped something and people responded - it's cause and effect. I don't see what there is to be upset over the fans reactions - unless they were personal attacks or offensive in which they mostly were not. Dan's replies were as someone here said, passive aggressive and again he was the one who created this situation so I don't get his defensiveness.

Not to be overly critical here - but from the standpoint of a consumer and audience member, the job of Youtubers is to create content that people like to watch such that they can get views etc. - it can be the trend type of tumblr tag or it can be more interesting and thoughtful videos.

As for Dan, I'm not sympathetic for his creative problems nor do I think he as a high earning adult needs to be coddled and felt sorry for. Creativity and production isn't just about suddenly having a spark of genius - it's about consistent work as well. If he's going to make hardly any DINOF videos in 3 months and then churn out an ISG he's going to be the loser for it, that's all. I agree with those who says he needs a kick to get going.

Having said that, all the best to Dan! Hope he gets himself together and I say this in the nicest possible way.

i get your point here, but to play devil's advocate, if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. at the end of the day, dan is a millionaire who has no problem nudge nudge wink winking at the phandom at the best of times to maintain peoples interest (which is one of the reasons why a coming out video is so outlandish, because he needs to keep people interested).
also i feel like everyone (dan included) is incredibly hyperbolic about the way dan is mocked by his audience. like cmon, they pointed out how his jumper looked like it had weed leaves all over it. they occasionally call him a rat. they spam him with inoffensive memes. so what? for one, the guy is 25. also, its completely benign and really doesnt constitute a hilariously vicious attack like dan (sarcastically) maintains

Fair enough. I agree about the whole stalking thing, but not quite about the fanfic thing. I feel like he's kind of.. encouraged fanfiction writing? He's never all out said "Don't write fanfiction or draw fanart of me please."
I think part of the issue is the really strange relationship that you mentioned he has with his fanbase. He encourages certain sarcastic, bullying behavior, but he also hints at wanting a more serious branding and content-creation process. It's just weird and complicated.

At the end of the day, this is all speculation, because I'm not Dan and I don't know his private thoughts or feelings. All I know, at the end of the day, is that I'm still subscribed to him because I find him genuinely funny and talented and I just want him to be secure in that and happy.

To stray from this topic a bit into a less-polarizing topic, when do we think new merch might be a thing? I would love to buy some pastel deppy merchandise!

Edit: your post, cherrybomb3, reminded me of another thing I'm curious about. are deppy certified millionaires? do we know what their net worth/earnings could be? no particular reason why I want to know this. I'm just generally curious.

Haha after posting I did exactly that! I searched and it seems like Dan and Phil are both worth about 2 - 2.5 million each (ah!!) and SocialBlade says that Dan earns anywhere from 1.9k - 29.7k a month from Youtube alone, while Phil earns anywhere from 1.8k - 29.3k a month. DanandPhilGames earns anywhere from 4.8k to 76.2k a month. Add this to the revenue they made from the tour, plus merchandise, plus YouNow tip money, and I think they are doing just fine.

I'm going to quote a post on tumblr by nihilist-toothpaste, hopefully she won't mind - but this sums up better than anything I've read yet how I feel about fandom's reactions to Dan in the sense of going overboard defending/protecting him:
nihilist-toothpaste wrote:i think it’s a tricky topic because it’s hard to know where to draw the line. like what makes a tweet saying “hey you didn’t disappoint, thanks for uploading something for us bud!” different from a tweet that says “hey i didn’t really like this video but i get ur going through a hard time no hard feelings bud!” different still from a tweet that says “DAN I LOVE YOU BABY PLS NEVER BE SAD YOURE AN ANGEL AND A FLOWER AND I WOULD DIE FOR U AND KISS THE GROUND U WALK ON U SAVED MY LIFE.” it’s perhaps my own internal biases but something about the third one really feels dehumanizing to me in a way? like it doesn’t treat dan as just a full-grown man who makes videos, and instead puts him on a pedestal and erases the complexities and textures of his personality, his struggles, and seems to say that because he made this person happy and saved them, in whatever sense they mean that, that he shouldn’t feel the sadness and negativity he feels and he should be happy instead. i fully recognize that this might be too harsh of a reading and that that third person could just express emotion very differently from me but when i see tweets in that category in such a high volume, and then dan himself says that he doesn’t need/want that sort of reaction (but he appreciates it), i just feel inclined to side w dan and suggest that people dial it down a bit. and i think my other issue is ppl who react w that level of concern tend to also be hating on this fandom at large for no apparent reason and that just seems like an overreaction to me.
I think Dan himself responding to that one tweet in a way that seemed almost grateful just proves the point, too. He picked one that as positive but not overt, exaggerated gushing.

he doesn't have any other career prospects, though, does he? Another part of the problem is that he's literally grown up on the internet before an audience that kept growing and won't have him forget any of the things he might be embarrassed years later. I feel like it also explains why he's always going on about how he's joking all the time, everything he puts on the internet is there forever, it becomes a part of his (sorry) persona, a label that gets stuck on him. As for the inoffensive memes, I was talking more about the youtube comments and the things he gets in his twitter replies (having a flashback about the pinof questions right now :? ) I don't have anything to answer about innuendos, though, I have some complicated opinions on this. As for coming-out, it is possible he won't do it because he doesn't identify as anything or changes his opinion every other week (this thought, about changing, has actually just occurred to me, but it would be so Dan )

and no, it doesn't feel like you are attacking me, we're ok

there you go that puts stuff into words quite nicely. its quite a shame that there isnt much of a moderate faction in the mainstream phandom. seems like the only opinions being expressed on more widely popular sites are 'omg wher i the coming out video u fuck' (in the minority now) or 'i would literally rather die than imagine u might be upsetti daniel'

I didn't like ISG9 but the part that did make me was the prank so I'm happy to get a follow-up from the person who sent him that and his acknowledgment of it. (worthless contribution, soz. I'll leave you now with your top quality and well-articulated discussions). :platonic:

They have private limited companies, which means their abv. balance sheet, shareholder information, etc. are publicly available. It's pretty easy to find but I'm not going to link it here because there's some personal info accessible from the docs. As SocialBlade is very speculative concerning finances, I summarized the accounts (but I'll put it in the spoiler in case you don't want to know?)
the most recent filings I found for their individual accounts were for the period ending oct. 2015, where AmazingPhil Limited earned 412K and DanHowell Limited earned 599K.

They are shareholders in three other companies, IRL Digital Limited, TATINOF Limited, and Dan and Phil Productions Limited. IRL's accounts were just released for the year end May 2016, where the shareholder funds = 905K, which is shared between D&P and Martyn. They made 286K in 2015. The other two companies won't have their small company accounts released for a while.

So while we don't have any of the updated info, just looking at 2015's channel and merch revenue, Phil earned 412 + 95 = 507K and Dan earned 599 + 95 = 694K. This is just for the fiscal year and does not include income from anything else, such as the radio show.

Now for 2016, their channels probably earned a bit more since they made their videos longer (double that ad revenue, boys$$$) and they got stable views. Just seeing the big jump in merch revenue it would be reasonable to assume the tour and book and everything sold quite well, so I would say yes, they definitely are worth overall somewhere in the millions...but they definitely aren't just sitting on their money, they're too smart for that. I would say Dan's making about as much as he would have if he'd become a lawyer (assuming UK lawyers earn as much as US lawyers do? because 4 years out of law school my brother is definitely richer than deppy).

All this is in the GBP and is rounded to the nearest thousand.
this is all easily accessible public information.

Quick question for y'all...what do you think Dan and Phil Productions Limited is being used for? the gaming channel? I don't remember ever specifically talking about this company, I'm curious

on the whole dan being snarky to polite and caring fans and dan being sensitive to critique, i feel like.. i sort of put him on a pedestal myself? i feel like he's a precious little bean who shouldn't be hurt, but i also understand he has his flaws (as does everyone). i do think dan hyped the video up a bit but it was ultimately the phandom (on tumblr mostly from what i saw) that overhyped it, thinking it was gonna be a coming out video. i mean, i had my hopes but i knew never in a million years it was happen so i had like, a fraction of hope for that happening lmao.

i feel bad for dan, because he doesn't deserve to feel sad or worthless bc of the mean phandom members @'ing him on twitter, but..i also feel like..he had this coming, in a way? i don't know. he kept giving out hints and false hope about the new video that was coming out, and then he felt he wasn't ready to release it so he released isg 9, which i can understand, he wasn't ready. but i feel he should've at least waited a bit before putting out the isg 9 or at least some other video, and made it into a video that he was satisfied with, instead of putting out a half assed one that seems like he didn't fully enjoy and that it seems like he's..off in the video. don't get me wrong i did enjoy isg 9 a lot, but i still got an off vibe from it and that he wasn't really himself.

i just..feel bad for him but i also feel like he brought it on himself slightly, and the tumblr phandom fuckin overhyped it. i'm sorry if this doesn't make sense, my thoughts are everywhere and i'm bad at articulating what i want to say into words.

I'm slightly confused about what conversation is even happening in general here, but to play devil's advocate even more: that 'can't stand the heat' thing can definitely work both ways. You said earlier Dan was attacking his fans, he literally didn't do that? Being slightly snippy or passive-aggressive, sure, but that's a far way from attacking anybody. So like, when did this become about Dan not being grateful 'enough' because 'this is his job'? The gaming channel is also his job and it seems to be doing just fine in terms of quality/consistency/viewer enjoyment. I fully understand criticizing the way he went about this particular video, and his long history of procrastination and not delivering on his promises (or just his hints of promise), but everything here just seems like an unfocused pile-on. We all know he can do better, he knows he can do better, and at least now we know the next video can't possibly be an ISG (even though it may be forever until he uploads again).

And the argument of 'they have money therefore they can't ever complain or be ungrateful about anything' is just: no. That's some weird entitlement. It's great that you support them and watch their stuff because you choose to and you enjoy it. That doesn't make them beholden to you. One bad day and string of tweets doesn't make Dan retroactively ungrateful, it makes him human. Listen, I didn't like this video. I found it pretty boring and not funny. And I'm disappointed because, based on what he said, I just expected different. I expected better. And even though he may like how the video turned out (..?), he must have known even before posting the reaction wouldn't be overwhelmingly positive. (Right?? Does he think everyone loves ISG?? Isn't there always a lacklustre response to it (at least on twitter etc)? It's already got 1M views, so maybe it doesn't matter)).

So he wasn't up to doing anything more creative this time around, for the usual reasons (or new ones we don't know about). I would take some of his snippiness with a grain of salt since I bet it's also coming from being frustrated with himself. What if he did just decide to pack it in one day and only do the gaming channel and liveshows? Left to his own devices he'd probably be just like Chris. Hm. I lost my train of thought. I bet we get a Horse Prince vid tomorrow.
Thanks and have a great day! Oil me

Thank you for all of the information!! I thought Dan and Phil Productions Limited might be for the gaming channel but whenever I check different statistics sites it always says that the company is Dan Howell LTD. Which doesn't make much sense. Deppy have so many companies it's hard to keep track of what's going on with all of them.
I am always on Phil Lester's side

I don't get how to post images yet but what do people feel about Dan's tumblr post just now?

Dan and Phil Productions Ltd was for their two movies. If you read the credits, that company name is there.

You mean the bee movie post right? I mean that was the only bit that made me laugh out loud watching the video and I imagine the inbox will be filled with 1000s of Bee Movie scripts now

I also feel like maybe it was a 'see people do enjoy these videos' kind of response to the dissapointed people too? I dunno, just me? ;)

I bet we get a Horse Prince vid tomorrow.

okay so my point was probably expressed in a dreadful and blunt way. i certainly dont feel like im entitled to any particular form of content from either of them, nor do i think that having large sums of money immediately makes your opinions less valid.

that being said, i dont think the standing the heat or removing yourself from the kitchen point can be used both ways tbh. mainly bc out of the two sides here, one of them is comprised entirely of a man who has essentially dedicated his life to being, to some degree, in the public spotlight. hes a celebrity. d&p may play down this aspect of themselves and i dont personally feel like they ever lord it over anyone, but the fact remains that they are entertainers who have chosen to live their lives beholden to the gaze of millions of people
on the other hand, their fans are most likely not celebrities. they are an audience like any other, and one dominated by young individuals. they do not have the same experience as dan does. so whilst i was stupidly wrong in characterising the tweets as 'attacks' or w/e, the fact remains that a fan angrily tweeting dan and dan replying with a sassy comment are incredibly different scenarios; the latter obviously having the power dynamic heavily in dans favour. i am not too fussed about dan being passive-aggressive personally, but i can definitely see why other people would consider it to be rather rude

sorry if none of this makes sense btw i need to go to sleep

Oh! Thank you, that makes sense.
The whole DAPG thing's really interesting, because that channel did pretty well in 2015 (got some good spon in there too), there's no way 600k could cover both dan and DAPG.
