The gap between Dan and Phil's subscriber counts is huge. It not like he is just slightly more popular he has around 60% more subscribers, it's kind of a given he'd be getting considerably better viewing figures per video than Phil as he has a considerably larger core audience.

That being said that doesn't negate from the fact Phil is a very successful youtuber. He is in the top 500 on a site of billions for goodness sake. And he has literally been managing to make this his full time career for as long as it's been possible to make money from YT.
I'd say he is doing just fine but he is doing more than fine. He is a YT success story. He only ever comes up short if you measure his success solely by how he is doing in comparison to Dan. It like if we measure Dan's success solely against how he's doing numbers wise in comparison to someone like pewdiepie. Dan will come out the loser but he'll still be just as successful as he is now in reality.

I've finally gotten around to watching the horse prince videos and I'm so weirded out, oh my god. :D I don't regret it though, they're really funny. I love their character voices.

Thanks, for explaining, fancybum!
I understand your point a lot better now. You’ve quoted one of my posts there (the one about creative block and going on nevertheless) and I just wanted to clear up that I was speaking from an artist’s perspective there and at least for me creative block has nothing to do with my anxiety. This might of course be completely different for Dan and I should’ve considered that. The thing is I work with creative people who go through creative blocks all the time so I’m kind of used to artists getting them but I guess assuming that’s what Dan’s going through at the moment was a bit hasty. I based the assumption on the way he’s been talking about quality content and stuff the past few weeks but you’re right, there could be another reason and if it’s his anxiety then what I said about creative block doesn’t apply at all. I should have considered that.

I’ll also have to admit that I was super tired last night and skipped over some posts. Reading back some of the replies were in fact quite flippant and I don’t agree with all of them. I do understand where you’re coming from now and I’m starting to feel like though most of the discussion was civil, it was also about a million different muddled points and people talking past each other so misunderstandings were bound to happen. Anyways, thanks for explaining again.
[offtopic]By the way, Youtube has started randomly translating some video titles and descriptions into German for me. :wtf: This is probably to do with the captions (I think?) and my computer being very confused about my location but I had a bit of an "wtf, am I still dreaming?" moment this morning when Youtube asked me if I wanted to watch Phil's gym video again but the title was in flawless (I think, lol) German. It's gone back to English now though. [/offtopic]

I've been meaning to ask this, youtube has been doing this (translating titles to german) to me for quite a while now. What's that all about?
I thought it maybe did this with videos where subtitles for your language have been submitted and approved for?

am i...am i finally caught up with the latest idb thread??? i can finally start living again! wow that was a never-ending rollercoaster and i only started reading around the october timeline because i'm not mental enough to go back to the very beginning. 'twas very informative and nailed home the fact that i've thrown my heart at deppy's casino table.

i am also unabashedly a horse video fan because, like you said, it's self-aware and satirical and the dialogue is a+++++++ hilarious; it tickles the fanfic writer in me who LOVES dialogue. and yes, cheeky!phil is my favourite (phil is just generally life to me). coming from someone who accidentally read a fic of certain beloved cartoon characters living in a pineapple under the sea on adultfanfiction.net ages ago (and finished it, it was the most horrifying thing ever, i couldn't look away plz don't judge me :gg: ), my cringe level is up there in the stratosphere

You are not alone with the lurking on adultfanfiction.net (sorry professor layton.... )
Fanfiction will always be my secret shame

ISG: never got into the series, still one of Dans re-occurring videos that I have not watched fully (except ISG9)
HOW did this series get nominated at the BONCAS?
Do people have a love/hate relationship with it? /

I don't think I can articulate my thoughts into a long text post like other members here (I enjoyed reading everyone's interesting opinions), but I personally do think that it's Dans own fault for overhyping a video. I know there were two videos: the one that he gave up (which I think was a kink video, which I was looking forward to) and ISG. From what demonphannie said on tumblr, I had a hunch that it would be ISG, which was disappointing.

Horse Prince: I got the notification while with my friend. She screamed when she saw the CHOKE ME HORSEY title (She's a Deppy fan but not as engrossed as i am). I had to explain a LOT to her about this bonkers series. She's scared now

I loved the vid, partly because I was staring at Phil the whole time in his beautiful ladybird jumper. The chopstick holding horse was just

Anyone else call spring onions scallions? (Its a Irish thing, we have a hell of a lot of slang)

I'm so glad they showed more fanart! Congrats to all the artists featured (I knew the horseriding animation had to be there)
IMO: it just shows how aware Deppy are of how 'out there' the series is (and that they know how twisted our minds are and what we were bound to do )

And yes I want THP to continue! help me my innocent mind has been corrupted :help:

I didn't even try watching ISG9, so boring, and I loved the horse video.
[offtopic]I've been thinking about something and I wanted to know what everyone else though: when do you think the shift in deppys audience happened, if it ever did? As in, has their biggest group of fans always been between ages 12-16? (i've only watched them for about two years so idk) I know a lot of us are older, for example from the IDB survey the biggest age group here is 20-24, but i mean the kind of crowd you see at TATINOF, or vidcon or whatever one of those. How do you think that happened? besides Phils main channel videos, I don't think they make content for children, so i'm curious about it.[/offtopic]

There's some really interesting posts on here about Dans issue with "quality content" and what he perceives as quality content etc, I wish there was a like button. The one thing that's been bugging me for a while is whilst he may be picky about what he does and he has every right to be, after all his work does reflect on him, but he's got a habit of sneering at the videos he's in with phil and it seems to be more pronounced lately, he seems to always say things along the lines of "ugh quality content yeah what am I doing here" but in the pastel vid phil actually said "don't worry there's no integrity here" which made me feel quite sad for phil in a way, while he doesn't make the long rants dan does you can tell he still takes pride in what he does and to have dan his partner/best friend/whatever openly joking about the type of vids he makes with an "ugh why am I here" attitude must still hurt a bit even if phil knows he's only joking. I think the whole self deprecating thing is a form of him pointing out what he perceives as his faults before any one else does, and whilst it's a very British fault it's one he perhaps needs to look at and try and see his positives as well as any negatives whether real or not.

Ps did anyone ever find the "ugh I didn't sign up for this type of content" comment on the make up video that clearly bugged him or is it something that he's assumed the prententious film maker types would write?

Time to unlurk! Anyway, I don't think Phil takes those comments too seriously. They've known each other for pretty all of Dan's adult life, I think he knows that his remarks aren't serious.

I've thought about this from Phil's perspective and I've always felt like Phil can be lighthearted about the content he makes for many reasons but one is that he probably already feels validated in a way that Dan can't. He has a masters degree in post production and video editing so despite what some YouTube "filmmaker" may say- on paper Phil has the proper credentials to say that he is qualified to make whatever kind of content he wants. He even talked about this a little in his last liveshow - he said that even if he doesn't make films, he knows how to use the tools that he has to do that if he wanted to.

I know everyone perceives things differently, but I really truly believe the whole self-depricating schtick is just that, schtick, (said at times by both of them now) and meant completely for comedic purposes. After 8 years together, if grown-man Phil was hurt by something, I’m pretty sure he’d have a conversation about it with Dan like an adult, and that if either of them was truly uncomfortable with something, it would be edited out. We would never see it.

Since their subscription rates vary by such a large amount – for lots of reasons that probably make no sense to those of us who love them equally – I don’t think it’s realistic to just look at the number of views.

I like to look at the percentage of views per subscription. For their last “solo” vids, Dan is actually at about .23 % of views per subscriber and Phil’s is slightly higher at about .25%.

So I bolded pearshaped34’s comment, and I agree, by all measures Phil is certainly a very suceessful youtuber

I'm indifferent to the horse game. Like with a lot of other things D&P have played like Akinator and Google Feud I don't think the game itself is particularly entertaining standing on it's own but D&P playing it is still be enjoyable to me.
That being said I'm not into it enough that I can say I care whether they continue playing it or move on to something else.

I'm not bothered by the concept of it though like some others are, I know the whole horse/human romance disturbs some people but because of how silly of a game it is that doesn't bother me at all to be honest. I mean to be real the horse might as well be a boy from what we've seen so far not only does he have a human face but he talks and spends each episode doing things a horse couldn't do like cutting up vegetables or running on treadmills.
If it was about a girl being attracted to a horse that looked and acted like a horse and each episode was him neighing and chowing on grass while she got her thrills brushing his fur then yes I'd be disturbed but as it is it's just too much of a parody for me to come close to being actually disturbed by it.

That is a good one.
I don't really like it and it is not something that I'll rewatch, but I do watch it and don't hate it either.
So I'm just meh on it.

I loved that video, which is super surprising since I really didn't like the first two. They both seemed so chill and happy, plus their bantz were more hilarious than usual.

fancybum, I just have to on your last few posts--I get uncomfortable sometimes with the 'grow up' type comments and you voiced everything perfectly.

I don't have time to write much and the convo is mostly dead by now, but I just wanted to say it never even occurred to me that he was resentful of his parents because of their financial situation. I've always thought that any non-positive feelings towards his parents are b/c they didn't support him enough emotionally (in his opinion). Thinking about comments like the "sitting me in front of the tv" one and the "suddenly care once you write a book" one.

@theneedledrop is anthony fantano, a music reviewing youtuber, and one of the most prolific and renowned on the site (he is also a super problematic reactionary MRA dick, so theres that)

dan expressed his hope that a new track by arca (cool avant garde producer and artist) would be featured in @theneedledrop's video regarding cool new songs. it wasnt. dan unsubbed. @theneedledrop tweeted a characteristically rude response. dan... replied to this with a watermelon gif. honestly not sure why but im sure it was a sick burn

The only thing I took from this tweet is that Dan must be out somewhere as he's tethering his phone to something (I assume his MacBook) and using 4G and not their home wifi. Wonder what he's up to on this Sunday evening.

Also, I thought that the dudes reply to him was actually kinda rude towards Dans fan base, tween girls indeed.

Oh, and the melon thing is because theneedledrop gets called melon sometimes (you can thank jesp for that insight).
