re: voldy and the 'why can everything be proven by tweets if it was a genuine and personal video' question. In my opinion, Dan and Phil were the kind of people that put everything in social media back in 2009, so that's why. We all had a friend or two who would write 'Brb, I'm going to the toilet' on Facebook or Twitter, right? I sure did, so it doesn't feel weird to me that almost all the moments in the video can be tracked.

And people who think all the cutesy stuff was an act to get popularity: their bond wouldn't be this strong if from almost day one they had had that in mind, because their interactions wouldn't have been sincere. They would have been the British version of Lush and I'm sure they wouldn't be together today.

Back to lurking. Have a nice day guys!

Hi! I just want to say that bluebox-away, I really, really appreciate the hard work you put into finding the WL video. I have such admiration for your ingenuity and perseverance! You did what no one has been able to do for years and the phandom will be forever indebted to you.

As for the video, it was great! At first I was like, wow, he has no charisma! But then he started sassing Anne and my life was made. It made me so proud and happy when he was talking about how he wants to go into media and he makes videos online. But how could he not know what a pangram is? Lol

I've never appreciated his current hair so much.

I'm also strangely pleased that Dan and Phil didn't exaggerate or invent the llama/gnu anecdote.

busy being happy~

I'm super curious to discover what they have for us during the tour. I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic, but not get my hopes up too much, haha.

What do you guys think will be the next video from them anyway? A collab? A Phil vid? DAPG? Probably not Dan since he just uploaded....

Regarding voldy, did anyone else notice Phil admitting that he isn't a great prankster/only does low-level pranks in his recent liveshow. The amount of effort if voldy is actually a prank doesn't seem very low-level to me. I mean, it's possible that they just completely misjudged how the reaction to that would be and Phil thinks voldy is low-level, but still... :sideeye:
I like pranks like that, that don't make people sad or scared, or ruin their life too much. I'm quite a lame, low-level prankster. I mean, I don't really prank anyway. If it's going to happen, I'm low-level. I don't like to spoil someone's day. I'd rather someone was happen at the result of a prank, rather than scared or sad.

I honestly don't hold out too much hope in the form of videos during the tour but we will get loads of other content such as photos from the m&g and reviews etc. I know Dan said they would film a few more gaming videos before they leave (I assume Phil is leaving this weekend) but unless they haven't slept at all I can't see them having filmed that many tbh. There will be some Dil/Undertale though, at least they can bulk film that and break it down into episodes.

We can't force people to do anything but bluebox-away and I respectfully request that the WL link not be shared outside of IDB. Also be cautious of new posters/lurkers with few or no posts. As it took a great amount of effort to obtain we would like to keep the audience to IDBers for now.

Thanks.

Yeah, I really can't see them as being that manipulative of their audience, especially not back then. Their idea of a prank is to put up a phony crafting channel or put flour in someone else's hairdryer, I don't think maliciously queerbaiting sounds like their idea of a laugh. Also, I think it speaks for itself that Phil goes around trying to actively remove all traces of the video from the internet.....

faerietales good find. Wow laying the awk on thick! It reminds me so much of the cactus moment on IT, Phil dropping this bomb of a comment that seems innocent to anyone else, Dan's face filled with absolute panic while Phil refuses to look at him but has a tiny smile on like the cheeky thing he is. i live for that shit
bedhead91 wrote:Some random thoughts about Voldy...
I only quite recently watched the Voldy video for the first time, because I truly believed it was just a prank and thought it was something that the Phandom has blown way out of proportion. So I found it, 100 percent convinced it was just a prank video, started watching it and then....wow. I had to stop watching it half way through because I felt so guilty and invasive. It was so sweet and genuine. I still feel guilty now having seen it :? .
I see this reaction so much from people and before I watched it, I thought people had to stop watching it because it was so cringe, or maybe it was evident it was a prank when you watched it and the shippers were just building it up (I'd read way too much antiproof at that point and didn't want to be disappointed) but once I actually did see it, I had the exact same reaction. It felt like I was intruding on a super private moment but I couldn't look away. Sweet and genuine is what I'd use to describe it too... And also incredibly guilty once it was over.

oh my god you voldy talk people, distract me from my psychoanalyze talk i wont blame you
despise me being phan as fuck (not 100% yet tho, 99% convinced), I showed voldy to two of my irl friends just to want a outside view, they watched it and asked me was video from the stalker or the stalkee. (I might have given them the wrong right impression when i tell them the deppy origin story.)
And they said since it was from the stalkee, it was very real and very genuine, they think deppy are 100% in love.

That's be Bob Marley, wouldn't it? It's definitely from a song. I'm not sure what the frame on a tripod (??) would even be though, or was he just listening to music while doodling and writing some of the lyrics down.

The face looks a bit like Homer Simpson.

people were talking about voldy while i was asleep? wow. okay. thoughts under spoilers in case people are tired of the convo now
personally, I think it's real for a lot of reasons, but above all - I just don't think that Dan and Phil are cruel. Or were ever. I mean, they said and did hella a lot of problematic stuff back then, but this? It'd be toying with people's emotions on a whole new level, it'd not be click-bait queerbaiting which is problematic enough, it'd be genuinely turning LGBT+ people's lives and realities into an elaborate prank. I think even back then, they were conscious enough to know *hella* better.

also, of course, there's the way none of it fits, like the fact that Dan was actually away, it was posed on the side channel, it's sweet to the point of being vomit-inducing to the more cynical of us, it fits their timeline really well... etc. feels like too much work for too little fruit, their shipping base can't have been that big in 2010, so there wouldn't have been an abundance of "creepy shippers" either.

and just a sidenote: I admire the morals of people who've not watched it/only seen it once/only seen a part of it. I have no morals. I am Earth's biggest scum who can recite the whole thing and watches it whenever feeling lonely in this ugly, loveless world. Morals not given, morals not found.

The only - ONLY thing I don't understand yes, I wholeheartedly think it's real - if Phil really is that good an actor then what the everloving fuck is he doing on YT?! about the video is why Phil left it stored on LAP after Dan had seen it/gotten back from holiday. :wtf: Yes, hindsight is always 20/20, but I don't think I'm being swayed by the glitch/unprivating/ensuing and ongoing battle of it popping up and being taken down ever since... in either of their shoes I wouldn't have been entirely comfortable with something so personal/private being online, even if it was supposedly "privated." Especially since Phil would have had the finished vid saved - I'd have taken it off/asked for it to be taken off LAP and given/asked for a copy of it to keep offline instead.

Maybe for sentimental value. If the screencap of the comments was real it was very sweet and touching and must have been a nice memory for them. Also remember Dan said he grew up in the generation when people didn't know better about posting private things online and that's how fans found old photos and information about him. He and Phil didn't expect Youtube to have such an error.

faerietales brought up the theory that they made videos for each other on multiple occasions. There could have been more than one 'voldy'. If it's true then since those videos were never unprivated they probably thought it was safe.
PolarFox wrote:That's exactly the thing that makes me question it - why would he mention all of that, what can be proven by tweets and db if it was personal video? Why not mention something else, inside jokes and stuff? And why would he mention so obscurely?
He mentioned obscurely because it was an inside joke. It was obscure to everyone but the two of them. He also talked about exploring the abandoned hospital on the 'snowiest day ever'. The snowy day was mentioned in a tweet but the abandoned hospital was new information if memory serves. Like annetamiau said they were the type to post their whole lives online so a lot of things in voldy ended up being proven by twitter and db.

it might just be my romantic heart but boy do i think the emotion in that vid would be really ?? hard to fake i had to keep pausing every few seconds out of sheer guilt bc the look in phil's eyes was just so darn Genuine and vulnerable i felt like i was reading someone's diary tbh and his voice would get soft and shy but also so sweet and sheepish - i really can't imagine there wasn't some kind of strong emotion behind the stories he was telling it felt too real my dudes

his entire demeanor felt like the personification of that butterfly feeling in your stomach - the fond voice and shy smile, it was like you could see this bubbling excitement as he'd recall things but it was also so reserved like a flurry of embarrassment that he pressed on with bc he wanted to convey just how special these memories were and just how much warmth they filled him with and go sh this is sappy isn't it

aNYWAY it just felt really genuine and got me right in the chest to the point that i Still feel like i need to get a good scolding about minding my own business and hi hello i haven't actually been on a forum in like 5+ years but hey it seems cool here
You just summed up my emotions about it very eloquently, so thank you. I think Phil was very hesitant to make it, which does suggest that Dan had either sent him a video or said something irl that warranted it.
That Pewdiepie video was cute, I remember watching him back when he made videos around that time (2012-ish)
[offtopic]I had a dream last night that I met D+P and my sister was with me, and she just got out her phone and started playing voldy for them. I was mortified and started apologizing and they were just kind of standing there wide-eyed... then my dream morphed into something else like zebras or something but those few seconds were [/offtopic]

What I find really interesting/ironic is that, assuming Dan and Phil are in a relationship, the reason they have been able to stay in the 'glass closet' so long is precisely because of their massive, rabid shipping fanbase, not depite of it. 'Phan' shippers are lumped in with the likes of Larry and Jaspar shippers, written off as delusional, annoying teenage girls who will ship any two attractive guys who are within close proximity of each other. The idea of 'Phan' became more and more a joke to people, including other YouTubers, when 'Phan' became this massively popular, mainstream thing to ship. (Before Felix met Dan and Phil, for instance, I remember him talking about Dan and Phil in a video, being like: 'Everyone want to see them fuck, but it's never going to happen,' or something along those lines.) Dan and Phil keep this up by occasionally liking mildly romantic fanart on Tumblr and talking openly about reading their own fanfiction because, if they are were actually in a closeted relationship they would never do that, right? Not to mention that because of their sense of humor, people won't take anything they say seriously. It's actually incredible to me that Dan literally said that he only started watching an anime for the boys in speedos, and people still think he's joking. They are essentially hiding in plain sight, which is both impressive and massively stressful. I don't envy them on that front.

Time as context also matters. At the time the video was posted, neither of them had fans in the same numbers or intensity. I'm sure there were some fans of Phil who were interested in their relationship not even six months in, but phan wasn't a thing as it is now, deep analysis and attempting to prove/disprove everything didn't happen for years on, after it leaked. So it's really not like Phil picked obvious things fans were already freaking out over and just talked about them.

in my own experience, people either 1) didn't really care about dan at all, 2) accepted that they were friends, 3) assumed they were dating and wanted to know more but again, didn't really care. the non fanbase viewers (meaning, like, people less involved in the community by not following dailybooth, tweeting ect) were kind of the only ones who thought 2 tbh. if you were more involved in the community then you were used to youtubers being a bit shady with relationships, so it didn't feel unrealistic
plus, there wasnt any proof to look for and there wasnt much secrecy, since pretty much everything was posted publicly and felt like something you could know. cherry was probably about the only unexplained joke, and it wasnt that hard to work out

This is a great point. I hadn't thought of this before, but it certainly makes sense. Lots of people think that the only reason people ship them is because, like you said, they are two attractive males, and so the internet ships them. This cases them to write the whole thing off and it becomes a joke to them and they never bother to dig deeper. And if they did dig a bit deeper than they would find out that there are very legit reasons to ship them and to think that they are in a relationship. So I do think it helps them, that so many people ship them and especially teenage girls on tumblr, because those always just get written off and not taken seriously.

Was it filmed in 2010?
And can you wonderful people also refresh my memory when it leaked again? The dreadful 2012?
I haven't seen it and have no real wish to. Having this happen to anyone is a cringe-worthy scenario.. :?
However,
I've seen some screenshots and the transcript. Can't speculate for certainty whether it's a prank or not but I'm also on team "I want to believe"™ soo.. It does seem too personal and elaborate to be a prank.
Very nice elaboration, bedhead91 ! The whole thing is quite fascinating.

You know what though, I can't wait to see what everyone (especially Dan ofc) comes up with for Phil's 30th birthday :D . (What they let us see that is.) It's quite far away but I'm planning a rather big celebration for a friend and I was reminded it was next year already.

Based on options 1 and 3, the entire concept of 'ooh, we're a couple!' as a prank is completely silly in the first place, then. And presumably the people that qualified for option 2 wouldn't have cared enough to make the prank actually successful.
